NCISLA Case Briefing: “The Seventh Child” (S7E19)

NCISLA_THE SEVENTH CHILD_2NCISLA Case Briefing: The Seventh Child (S7E19)

“The Seventh Child” – Callen and the team try to save a child in imminent danger who has been brainwashed by a terrorist cell. Also, Deeks and Kensi discuss having children, on NCIS: LOS ANGELES, Monday, March 21 (9:59-11:00 PM, ET/PT), on the CBS Television Network. Written & Directed by: Frank Military

Sounds like kids are once again a prime topic for the team this week, both in the case and in their personal lives. Well, at least some of their personal lives. Anytime a minor gets mixed up in wrong-doing the tough-as-nails agents can’t hide their tenderheartedness. Such situations tend to evoke more of a reaction from Sam as the father in the group.

Speaking of Sam, the initial promo counters the typical Big Bang Boom of the show. Instead, we’re met with a near silent introduction, one that expresses a keen sense of eeriness. In a sneak peak we see Callen working to approach the endangered youth. G states that he’s (physically) less intimidating than Sam. While that is likely true, is there a secondary reason? Could it be he fears Sam would be too emotionally invested to respond in the necessary objective manner?

Why did the terrorists choose this particular child? Is the young man tasked with setting off an explosive or some other toxic material? Of a home, within a water tank, or something altogether different? Have they turned him into a martyr? How might the team breakthrough the indoctrination?

Deeks’ Week: “Deeks and Kensi discuss having children?!” So, let’s take this piece by piece. This instance certainly isn’t the first time the topic of “kids” has been referenced by our favorite duo. Yet each time it grows stronger. It used to simply be about babysitting or comforting a youth who found himself in a troubling situation. At other times it was just humorous taunts, such as the Mutant Ninja Assassins or Little Martys running to and fro. Then the topic expanded when Sam confronted Kensi with the expected future. Now Kensi has voluntarily purchased a mommy mag?! Wow. Blye’s “All In” seems to be launched on fast forward! They just moved in together….

The fandom has naturally considered Deeks a man in desire of his own family, especially since he’s always been the one to mention the topic – joking or otherwise. Based on the detective’s overtly uncomfortable reaction, might we have gotten that characterization completely wrong? Or was it just sooner than he anticipated? Perhaps he expected to have to convince Kensi in that direction based on her own past hesitancy? This gives us a bit of another occasion where their roles seemed to have reversed; now it’s Kensi who physically appears disappointed in the lack of Deeks’ positive reaction. Has the situation in which Deeks can actually have everything he wants scaring him? Like the rest of his relationship with Kensi, is this another instance in which all seems too good to be true? More recently, is Deeks concerned about Kensi taking on such a significant role as mother when she can’t even keep the shower neat? (Or perhaps they are simply laying pro-active groundwork should Daniela get pregnant again?)

How do you think the topic will play out over the course of the episode? Will Densi come into agreement or be at odds?

  1. Thanks for your case briefing. Hope everything was fine in LA.

This “all in” Kensi is too good to be true! Her biological clock must be really ticking if she’s the one to buy a mommy magazine.
We expected Deeks would need time and patience to convince her to have babies and it turned out to be the opposite? Almost unbelievable.
I don’t know how the rest of the Densi conversation about kids will go on, but what I know for sure is that the image of disappointed, almost watery-eyed Kensi going up to OPS did break my heart…

  2. Thank you for the case briefing. This episode is going to be another important one for Densi.

Kensi must have been thinking about having kids since Deeks’ little brother thing, assuming that was what he wanted. Now she’s about to be ready, but it seems like (to her) he’s been saying what he dosen’t mean… It’s heart breaking. But as she walks away, Deeks’ nipples are just distracting me…

I’m sure they’ll communicate and deal with it just fine as they’ve been lately, just hope we can see that unlike last episode.

  3. I think Deeks’s problem is that the fantasy of having children with Kensi is about to become a “reality”. And that scares him more than he has ever realized. Hopefully he will clarify his thoughts & feelings, because Kensi did look hurt and hurting Kensi is the last thing he would ever want to do. The “lovebirds” better remember to communicate.

  4. As long as we see some more of Deeks & Kensi this episode I will be happy. The last few episodes have been very light. Nothing will be able to top the shower scene of course! It is amazing and wonderful how far the couple have progressed over the last season. They are so much fun to watch!!

Not really a reply as much as a question. Does anyone else think it might be a baby picture of River on the cover of the magazine? Deeks says damn cute baby in the midst of all his angst and it just made me wonder.

Im torn with the way the story line is heading. i feel it is way too soon to have a baby for DENSI. the show has moved from that cute innuendo to straight out talk of sex. i think kensi is portrayed as a little nasty when it comes to deeks. and on that note when the hell will she ever call him by his first name. your living with someone – a first name would be nice. please don’
t make deeks out to be the problem here. i think you need to soften kensi a little. sometimes she treats deek with contempt and i hate that. i love him – he is sensitive, and loving and cute. just trim his hair and beard. a little too shaggy. now for callen – im glad you brought back Anna for him. much better than joelle. she was just too sweet although i did like her in the beginning. how are you going to pair her when callen has SAM as a partner. doesn’t matter they are great together. now that we have met callens father will there be another interaction? would like more of a back story on him and deeks. i absolutely love this show as it is the only show i watch on tv. please keep it going. love the undercover work. the show really works. the chemistry is there from everyone. thanks for a wonderful family show. its a pleasant change. love you all –

    • I agree with you about Kensi being harsh, not sure why she was written that way other than a hold over from her initial character traits (& possibly too many male writers?) However, I feel like they’ve addressed this in the back half of the season, hopefully from fan complaints! As for Anna, I’m on the other side. I find Bar Paly to be a terrible “actress”.

Agree with Lisa. I would like Kensi to call Deeks Marty as well. I hope we see a heartwarming conversation with the couple about children. We seem to get promising snippets of conversation with not much resolve in the end.

  8. I think it’s normal for her to call him Deeks. She has, on certain occasions, called him Marty and it usually elevated the emotion of the scene. I nearly always called my ex by his last name or a derivative of it. It didn’t mean I thought less of him, it was just the way it was. Fact of the matter was I mostly used his given name when tempers got heated. He always felt something was off-kilter when I tried to use it when we weren’t verbally sparring. Oh, well. It wouldn’t break my heart if she called him Marty a little more but I do know where the character and the writers are going here.

  9. Excellent case briefing, Gayle. Good points, too.
Kensi was definitely disappointed with Deeks’s reaction. I hope it’s just sooner than he expected and not that he doesn’t want kids. I agree, Deeks needs to clear the air.

  10. It seems like everytime I see a troubling preview, I freak out and curse the writers and then everything turns out ok. Case in point, when Hetty tells Deeks that the best way to keep a secret is to not have anyone. I was totally upset that they might break up but then the he tells her and all’s well. I’m trying to not be disappointed in Deeks’ reaction because I’m thinking the preview is a misdirect to throw us off.

The whole notion of Kensi never calling him Marty bugs me too. The perfect instance of her calling him by his first name is in the breakfast scene in command and control (?) when she says that she’s always wanted to feel this way. She said Deeks and calling him Marty then would have made that scene perfect for me.

    Can’t wait for tonight’s episode.
