NCISLA Case Briefing: The Seventh Child (S7E19)

Sounds like kids are once again a prime topic for the team this week, both in the case and in their personal lives. Well, at least some of their personal lives. Anytime a minor gets mixed up in wrong-doing the tough-as-nails agents can’t hide their tenderheartedness. Such situations tend to evoke more of a reaction from Sam as the father in the group.

Speaking of Sam, the initial promo counters the typical Big Bang Boom of the show. Instead, we’re met with a near silent introduction, one that expresses a keen sense of eeriness. In a sneak peak we see Callen working to approach the endangered youth. G states that he’s (physically) less intimidating than Sam. While that is likely true, is there a secondary reason? Could it be he fears Sam would be too emotionally invested to respond in the necessary objective manner?

Why did the terrorists choose this particular child? Is the young man tasked with setting off an explosive or some other toxic material? Of a home, within a water tank, or something altogether different? Have they turned him into a martyr? How might the team breakthrough the indoctrination?

Deeks’ Week: “Deeks and Kensi discuss having children?!” So, let’s take this piece by piece. This instance certainly isn’t the first time the topic of “kids” has been referenced by our favorite duo. Yet each time it grows stronger. It used to simply be about babysitting or comforting a youth who found himself in a troubling situation. At other times it was just humorous taunts, such as the Mutant Ninja Assassins or Little Martys running to and fro. Then the topic expanded when Sam confronted Kensi with the expected future. Now Kensi has voluntarily purchased a mommy mag?! Wow. Blye’s “All In” seems to be launched on fast forward! They just moved in together….

The fandom has naturally considered Deeks a man in desire of his own family, especially since he’s always been the one to mention the topic – joking or otherwise. Based on the detective’s overtly uncomfortable reaction, might we have gotten that characterization completely wrong? Or was it just sooner than he anticipated? Perhaps he expected to have to convince Kensi in that direction based on her own past hesitancy? This gives us a bit of another occasion where their roles seemed to have reversed; now it’s Kensi who physically appears disappointed in the lack of Deeks’ positive reaction. Has the situation in which Deeks can actually have everything he wants scaring him? Like the rest of his relationship with Kensi, is this another instance in which all seems too good to be true? More recently, is Deeks concerned about Kensi taking on such a significant role as mother when she can’t even keep the shower neat? (Or perhaps they are simply laying pro-active groundwork should Daniela get pregnant again?)
