Review: NCISLA “Hot Water” (S8E13)

I have to start this review with a confession. When I learned the episode was penned by a first-time NCIS: Los Angeles writer who was also the executive producer’s daughter, my expectations fell. Well, I couldn’t be happier to have been totally wrong. Anastasia Kousakis jumped into her first NCIS:LA writing assignment by doing everything right. She gave us the most exciting episode of the season even as she kept everyone in character, remembered the past, and sprinkled in some appropriately placed humor. How soon can she write another episode?

A Heap of Trouble, A Load of Suspense

We know that episodes where a member of the team is personally affected by a case are the best ones, and Kousakis proved that big time by having every member of the cast personally affected. The story felt like it must have been fun to write given all the mayhem she got to unleash by isolating and arresting four team members, and trying to kill off several people. Had I heard nothing about this episode beforehand, I think it would have been even more entertaining as it moved from one calamity to the next. It started with a bang, with poor drugged Granger coming to and realizing that he was in big trouble, and it escalated from there.

The way it moved from problem to problem without fixing almost anything gave it a sense of growing suspense throughout. I think this is one of the benefits of a multi-part episode, that you can take your time telling the story instead of trying to pack everything from opening crime to catching the bad guys into 44 minutes. I don’t remember an episode that flew by this quickly, and I didn’t want it to end. Director Dennis Smith deserves a lot of credit too for keeping everything moving along so smoothly.

The Past Comes Back to Haunt

You’d never know a new writer was at work given the plethora of characters making reappearances. It almost felt like the showrunners were trying to respond to a frequent criticism about a lack of recurring characters by bringing back every law enforcement officer who’s ever crossed the team’s path! Internal Affairs Detective Whiting in particular just seemed to pick up where she left off in her dogged pursuit of Deeks for the murder of Francis Boyle. How disturbing was it that the mole had led her to Julie/Tiffany? And how chilling was it that she threatened to subpoena Kensi to force her to reveal what she now knows? This tactic drove home how necessary it had been for Deeks to keep his involvement in Boyle’s death from Kensi and the team for as long as he did. He truly was trying to protect them all. Unfortunately it may also have made clear how smart Hetty’s advice was at the end of “Internal Affairs” to not tell Kensi the truth. On the other hand, maybe this will prompt a quick wedding once Deeks is out of jail, to prevent her from being able to testify against him? (Just kidding, that’s not how I want that to happen!)

The interrogation scene between Whiting and Deeks was particularly well written. You could see Deeks working several angles at once, whining about the coffee to distract her so she’d lower her guard and reveal what new evidence she’d obtained and appealing to her pride in her work to make her see she’s being used. Well played, Deeks. Except that Whiting is a smart adversary (one reason I like her character). She reveals her evidence but also threatens the person he cares about the most in this world. Deeks tries flirting with Whiting to hide how vulnerable Kensi makes him. Kensi’s his kryptonite here, and Whiting senses his weakness. It’s scary and it will be interesting to see how this particular storyline plays out. (Spoiler alert: We know the short-term results based on some behind-the-scenes photos. But what about the long-term?)

Whiting: I ran into your partner earlier.
Deeks: Oh, Kensi is here. Wow good luck with that. Whiting: Is it “fiancée” now too?
Deeks: Is it going to break your heart if I say “Yes”? ‘Cause I should probably tell you I don’t believe in polygamy and Kensi would make a terrible sister wife.
Whiting: That’s probably why she didn’t want to talk to me.
Deeks: Yeah.
Whiting: I mean, I just mentioned the word “subpoena” and she practically ran out of here.
Deeks: Let me be perfectly clear about this. You leave her out of it.
Whiting: Lucky for you, I may not need her. Although, I guess that makes you unlucky, doesn’t it?

Except for the poor lighting that made it hard to see Deeks’ eyes (maybe my only complaint for the entire episode), this was a well directed scene. The way Deeks looms over Whiting when he tells her to leave Kensi alone shows how forcefully he wants to back up his words, but Whiting knows he has no leverage. She isn’t bothered by his body language; she knows she has him right where she wants him, a fact that’s made quite clear after she leaves and we see how rattled Deeks really is.

The Characters We Know and Love

Kousakis also did a great job at keeping all the characters in character. I would never have guessed this episode hadn’t been written by a long-time contributor. Deeks is still anxiously trying to bond with Sam despite Sam’s apparent lack of enthusiasm to be “in sync” and “simpatico,” even as Sam patiently tries to help him strategize about proposal plans(!). Callen, ever the aloof team leader, refuses to commit to doing much to speed Kensi’s return to the team but is unwilling to share any concerns he may have. Eric actually keeps count of the number of times people have asked him where Hetty is.

Hetty is quick to blame herself, maybe not all that sincerely, for problems that she may or may not have caused (“It was my job to find the mole, and now everyone is paying the price.” Mole theory tangent: I’d say her little show of regret will be perfectly fitting should the mole turn out to be Paul Angelo, since rather than arrest him she set him loose for reasons I didn’t understand at the time. (And since I don’t want to rewatch “Three Hearts” I am unlikely to gain more insight any time soon.)

Sorry, I digress. The character I was happiest to see back to herself was Kensi. OK, she and Deeks again shared no screen time, but it sure felt good to see her kicking butt in the field and interrogating a suspect. How long has it been since she’s kicked someone in the “nom de plumes”? That had to feel so good. Not necessarily the kicking, but the getting out into the field and taking action to save her team. (Although who am I kidding? It’s Kensi. Of course she enjoyed taking down the poor hospital security guy and feeling like she still has what it takes to get the job done.) When she was trying to get answers from the LAPD officer at the precinct, it almost felt like she was having fun. She seemed so much more at ease finally being freed to do the work that means everything so much to her.

I know some fans may be frustrated that again we got no Densi scenes even as we are apparently to assume that things have improved with the couple to the point that Deeks feels it’s time to move forward with the proposal (number four!) and Kensi is ready to say “yes.” I share your disappointment in the lack of Densi, but in this case I acknowledge that there was clearly no time. I am going to take Deeks’ planning, along with what I saw of Kensi this episode, as a good sign that she and they are doing much better. Would I like to have seen more of that shown on screen? Of course. But I’m going to patiently wait and hope for more Densi in our (near) future.

Flugelhorns and Coma Jokes

And while often I find that bits of humor inserted into what should be a serious episode just rub me the wrong way, the humor we got in this episode worked well. It felt appropriate, as if the characters were joking as a way to ease their own tension, not because they didn’t care what was happening. We had Eric with his precise question count and his coma joke (“Too soon, Eric.”) The expressionless LAPD officer who seemed completely uninterested in anything Deeks and then Kensi tried to get her cooperation. Callen chatting it up with his adorable neighbor Mrs. Ramirez behind a row of potted plants in order to surveil his own house. Hetty (and Kensi) toying with Duggan about Granger’s whereabouts. Deeks flirting with Detective Whiting as a defense mechanism. And Sam and Deeks with a hilarious rundown of the elements of Eric’s usual call up to Ops.

Sam: So you’re looking for the unexpected?
Deeks: You see, that’s what I’m talking about. You and I? Simpatico.
Sam: We are so not simpatico.
Deeks: We are simpatico.
Sam: We are not simpatico at all-
Eric: Guys. Needed up in Ops, ASAP.
Deeks: That’s it? No quips?
Sam: No soliloquies?
Deeks: No nerd trivia?
Sam: No show tunes?
Deeks: No flugelhorn?
Eric: Not today.

Now that’s a list written by someone who’s watched the show!

Memorable Moments

  • It’s always a good sign when the “Previously on NCIS: Los Angeles” includes major scenes from “Internal Affairs” and “Cancel Christmas.” It had me literally sitting up straighter and paying attention.
  • I liked the “Granger-cam” shaky camera work in the opening scene. It was very effective at conveying his disorientation.
  • Nice left-handed shooting, Blye!
  • As the author of a series in the “listicle” format, I will assume that Sam Hanna and the writer and showrunners just haven’t seen my “Top 3” articles, or maybe they wouldn’t be so quick to disparage the genre. But hey, at least Deeks defended them- “They’re so fun and digestible.”
  • I was a bit confused as to why Deeks couldn’t just walk from the waiting room and into the LAPD offices to find Granger himself? Why the need to ask for permission and act like a visitor?
  • Poor Granger! Are serious health problems not enough? You need to roofie him and then stab him in the back? This poor guy has gone through a lot. I also seem to recall him being shot and in a car accident in “Reznikov, N.” and being poisoned and in another car crash in “Traitor.” If he lives through this, he seriously needs to consider retirement. Sadly, I could also see his scenes as evidence that Miguel Ferrer has some actual health problems that have affected his speech. He had no lines of dialog at all in this episode.
  • Were you as relieved as I was that just when it seemed that every law enforcement officer the team has ever met was going to show up, we found out that Talia was unavailable? Yay to an episode without her or Anna! On the other hand, I’d have enjoyed a return appearance for Lieutenant Bates.
  • That was some seriously observant security at the hospital!
  • I was kind of excited when Eric whipped off that ski mask, thinking for a moment that he was the mole before it became clear that they were setting up Heather.
  • Is that the first time Hetty’s had to use the “emergency exit” in the boatshed? Bugger. This is a brand new suit! I’d have loved to have seen her jump.

Apologies for ever doubting you, Ms. Kousakis. I look forward to your next contribution to the show.

The worst part about the cliff-hanger ending is that we have to wait two weeks to find out what happens (and three weeks after that for the conclusion!). The pitfalls of a Sunday show on CBS. At least we know that showrunner R. Scott Gemmill has written the next episode, which has the challenge of beginning to pull together all these story threads. While we’re waiting, what did you think of “Hot Water”? Were you as riveted as I was?

  1. I know this site is purely about Deeks but did you realise there were other characters apart from him and Kensi in this excellent episode?

    • Wow ‘I am me’ you are brave.
I always get about trillions of ‘thumbs down’ when I say NCIS LA is not all about Densi. Or sometimes I mention that I like Deeks AND Callen and NO romance and the trillions of thumbs down doubled.
So whatever happens, you have my sympathy.

      • Beth, unlike “I am me” you do have a valid point. We are all here primarily for Deeks, but we should be able to like or dislike other characters, so long as we express those opinions respectfully. There’s no excuse for bombarding people with thumbs down – if people disagree, they should be able to politely offer a counter opinion. There should be plenty of room for the non-shippers among us as well.

        • Hoopdsive, you are right. But just look at the thumbs down at the comment from ‘I Am Me’ and you can see that some fans here don’t offer counter opinions. I know this so well, but actually I don’t care about it since I still have my opinion, still like Callen AND Deeks. And non shippers, as you called it, don’t have a standing here anymore since most of the fans here are just about Densi and complain about what the writers do with Kensi.
Also I agree with ‘I Am Me’ because Deeks is in a TV Drama show with many other great characters (eg the two main characters of this show Callen and Sam) and these characters not only make the show but also influence Deeks doing.

      • Hello Beth… I don’t think you have a lot of “thumbs down” because you said NCIS LA is not all about Densi, or because you like Callen (I like him too!!!). But maybe because you criticize ECO acting skills. At least for me. Even if I comment on this website since the beginning of season 8, I love Wikideeks for a long time and I often disagree with you about ECO’s drama acting, that’s why I put “Thumbs down” on your comments. I probably should answer to you instead of just dislike your comments, sorry. Everyone has the right to express his/her opinion but this is a website about Deeks and the actor who plays him, most of us are huge fan, don’t be surprise if some of us disagree with you about him!!!

    • “I am me”, reading a review on a site called Wikideeks and not expecting it to focus on Deeks is rather like going to an NCISLA site and expecting a review of Madam Secretary. Nothing against Madam Secretary, btw, I just don’t follow the logic of your apparent expectations.

  2. Nice review. I can’t remember the last time I was surprised by something that happened in an episode and Granger’s stabbing had me shocked enough to cover my mouth with both hands. We saw him on the floor in the teasers but I was assuming being beaten up or drugged. Stabbed in the back in prison! I really felt then that they were going to sacrifice his character for the storyline and for his health issues. Nicely done, NCISLA!

So. Deduction time. Who do we know of the recurring characters has enough pull to bring in THAT many different alphabet soup agencies to bring them down? Someone very high up. And insider knowledge about Tiffany. It can’t be Granger now (thank goodness). I’ve forgotten what the mole had been doing before being detected; what is his/her evil plan? They must have been getting close to an answer in order to bring about this kind of response, donchathink? Heather Morse coded CIA. Are they ultimately behind it? Sabatino? Who else do we know from the CIA? And the mole obviously didn’t think having Granger arrested was enough to take him out of the picture but also executed a plan to kill him. He was the bigger threat with that logic. And perhaps a personal one. A mole by definition means someone on the inside but in this case perhaps run by someone on the outside? Who hates them that much? Janvier? Let’s brainstorm this. Who was that private security service they brought down and then changed their name? The drug cartel?

I’d say the writer was someone who was new enough to still care about the show and the characters. Not blase, perhaps, or lazy, perhaps, like the long term, long running writers in the stable. Yes, more please. The mother ship has been running for 43 seasons, with NCISLA’s eight seasons we’re not even halfway there, people.

  3. Awesome review, Karen! You covered everything and then some. I’ve been trying to work out who the mole is from all the clues and recurrence of characters and your mention of Angelo…hmmmm…..
I totally agree…this episode was amazing! Congrats to Anastasia Kousakis, truly a chip off the old Dad’s block. I loved the feeling that Ms Kousakis is a fan of the show and invested in the team characters. Bringing back previous guest stars and references to past episodes was outstanding. All of the interactions and humor were spot-on. Loved this episode. Only comment that was the morse code sent out by Heather.. i thought she was morse coding to the mole watching in the camera but it was to anyone that knew Morse code…CIA…

I can’t wait for the next episode..especially since it is written by Scott Gemmill.

  4. I loved this episode. Thanks for the great review and picking up things I missed. It moved so fast and I liked the pace. I keep wondering about mole. I think it is two people or someone on the outside using someone inside. It has to be someone who heard Deeks and Hetty’s conversation or when Deeks told Kensi. Unless Hetty or Kensi is feeding info to the mole. Never liked Angelo so it could be him. I keep thinking Janiver is involved. He sends Callen cards so obviously is out there. I couldn’t believe Granger being stabbed even though with his health issues it would make sense to kill him. It speaks to our new writer how unexpected it was. We need more from her. The only I hate is how spread out these episodes are being shown. It slows down the intensity that this great episode starts with. Thanks for the review and I look forward to reading the comments.

I was waiting for this review so I can rant about the episode and it finally arrived. Hooray!
First, I would like to point out how excellent this episode was. With everything in it, not just Deeks’ and Kensi’s scenes. I would like to talk about the whole episode and the scenes in it, and I’ll include all characters. I just can’t explain it better without including everyone in it.

I watched the episode in live, because I wanted to see how the mole story line will turn out, and I stayed a little bit late (it was 2-3 a.m. here when I watched it-stupid time zone), and then I couldn’t sleep, because of everything that happened. I’m glad I did, because if I didn’t I was going to die when I watched it online the other day (or some 15 hours later). And I did re-watch it, because one time wasn’t enough.

The episode started with Previously on NCIS Los Angeles, and my heart just stopped when I saw Deeks telling Kensi about Boyle. And then the episode opened with Granger point of view, while he woke up disoriented and couldn’t remember what happened. Then he saw Heather bound and beaten up and he tried for a pulse, when LAPD showed up and arrested him. It was alarming that he wasn’t talking and wasn’t defending himself, which made me think that something is really wrong with Miguel Ferrer.

Then after the credits roll, we see Kensi and Callen practicing in the firing range and Kensi practically begging to be back on the field. Callen is not so assuring, but he promises to say a good word to Hetty.

I have missed a scene between Sam and Deeks like this, and the way they both entered laughing, and Deeks was so happy then and there, and it was enough for me, because so far he’s been so sad and crappy looking, that this was refreshment. Then they started pounding themselves on the chest, and when Sam hit Deeks, the way he laughed, it was really an awesome banter between the two. Plus him admitting that he wants to propose, and Sam offering advice, again, and Deeks being nervous because he haven’t picked a place, yet. ANd the sympatico part. How they finished each other’s thoughts when Eric called them to OPS was proof enough that the characters are going back to the game, like they were before the crash. Hope it stays that way in the next episodes too, and we’ll see a proposal after episode 15.

Then they are presented with the fact that Granger has been arrested. While Sam and Callen visit the crime scene, Deeks goes to LAPD, and Kensi is left behind, but goes to see Hetty, which is accompanied by Under Secretary Duggan. And Eric was hilarious with his count on how many times he’s been asked “Where’s Hetty?”.

Deeks is in the station and tries to get to Granger. I don’t know why they played it out like this, because he is a detective and a lawyer, and he could’ve easily gotten to Granger before any of this happened. But, instead he was told to wait. Maybe Granger was being processed and he was not allowed a visit, or maybe it was just another plot by the mole, so no one could see Granger, before he was stabbed. Maybe he saw something or someone and they couldn’t risk it with Deeks or any of the agents as a matter of fact. So, Deeks got arrested, again. A new evidence on his cold case, that just warmed up. And accidentally on the same day with Granger.

Sam and Callen are allowed to walk around the house and check on possible leads, when Sam finds the roofies and sends the pic to Eric before DEA pulls behind the Challenger and he’s asked to open the trunk of his car. And the DEA got an anonymous tip, just like with Granger. In the trunk of the Challenger are a body and cocaine which ultimately leads with Sam being arrested. At this point we have three of our people arrested on the same day, by different agencies, and no one connects a damn thing, because they have no idea this is a plot. So that leaves Kensi and Callen the only ones that can help their teammates.

Kensi notifies Hetty on what happened with Deeks, and Hetty once again scared the hell out of me of how she appeared out of nowhere in front of Kensi. And her conclusion that they went after the mole, but apparently the mole is going after them now.

Kensi goes and asks to see Deeks, which is again denied by the officer on the front desk. She also doesn’t seem to have feelings at all, because she just stares at Kensi and says nothing as she speaks about her coma and that she wants to accept Deeks’ proposal. Pretty much like she thought Deeks wasn’t serious when he asked her where and how she proposed. Once again Deeks wasn’t taken seriously.

Callen is at Mrs. Ramirez, watching his house, when ATF suddenly comes after him. He runs, but he is ultimately taken down by a dog, and then arrested – with a dead body found in his house alongside explosives. And when Callen says that this is an attack on NCIS, the ATF agent just sits there with a comment that it’s a possible theory and nothing else. It’s like they don’t believe experience agents, but anonymous tips and planted evidence. But, it’s their call, and nothing we do will change that.

Sam asks for Talia, but is told that she is on an assignment far away and she can’t help. And no one will believe him, too.

Deeks is being questioned by Whiting, and he tries to make her tell him about the new evidence using humor – which reminds me of the article I read yesterday about using humor to diffuse the tension. She mentions Tiffany, and then Kensi, and that’s when Deeks was hit in his sore spot. He looms over Whiting telling her to leave Kensi out of it, and you are right, the poor light of the place doesn’t gives a nice look on Deeks’ eyes, but by making him look like that from the dark background and the small amount of light on his face, makes the moment even more powerful.

Kensi goes back to the office where she discusses what should they do with Hetty, when Nell and Eric arrive with the news of Granger being stabbed in prison, and alive, but critical. I just hope that Granger will stay alive, and that everything will be okay with Miguel, because he is really worrying me. Aside from few scenes, we haven’t heard him talk in the episode, at all. Hetty decides to talk with Duggan and tell him everything. It turns out that he is on their side and wants to help – go figure. I still have my doubts about him and still keep him at close range with him having ties to the mole, or being the mole in the first place.

With Heather being awake and in danger from whoever beat her up, Kensi goes undercover in the hospital to take her out of it, and how she kicked that guy in the family jewels, I just missed that and Kensi doing that. She did an excellent shooting with her left hand, and after she took Heather and they drove away, the camera showed us Mr. Beale taking off his ski mask and that’s when I was surprised once more, because I was expecting the bad guys for reals.
    \
Deeks tried to get to talk to Bates (which I would’ve wanted to see, but we didn’t get him), but he is again told his captain is not available. And the way Deeks just banged on the door and the walls was hilarious, because you can see that the police officer that opened the door, you could clearly see on his face that he had a headache because of Deeks. Way to go, Mr. Deeks.

Kensi questions Heather, and she tells her by Morse code that she works for the CIA. Suddenly FBI with a SWAT team is at the Boatshed. Duggan goes out, trying to sort everything out, but he is shot. Hetty and Kensi escape through the secret exit before the screen goes black and we have to wait two weeks.

It was an amazing episode, and it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time (with occasionally cussing and yelling, for what happened and for so many commercials). We haven’t gotten an episode like this one in a while, and I hope they will continue with it. We didn’t get any Densi scenes, but I hope we will see in the next episodes. This is it, and if I have something else to say, I will.

Nope, I watch it online, through a link I found and sometimes it works, sometimes not, but it’s pretty stable once you start watching the episode. I usually watch the episodes online after they air. I can’t stream the CBS link, because I’m from Macedonia and it’s not available from my country.

  6. At the end of this ep I thought, “Wow. Someone is going to have a good time reviewing this one.” Lucky you Karen!

So finally. FINALLY! This. This is an ep that has been so far long overdue! It’s the kind of episode that got us all watching in the first place and one IMHO we haven’t had in YEARS. The pacing. All the past characters. All the team members in some way being in jeopardy. No clean sweep of any of it. This reminded me of when the cast says they basically shoot a movie in seven days. Indeed! The hits just kept coming. You couldn’t look away and frankly didn’t want to! It’s stirred up speculation on Tumblr in a way I thought was lost forever.

As for Deeks & Kensi – wow. To have so much insight into each of them as individuals and as a couple without even being in a scene together. Masterful!

I personally (at this moment) will be stunned if it’s ultimately anyone other than Janvier. Who else would have reason/cause to go after every single member of the team? (And I also personally hope he was using Anna on the inside after Carl got pinched just because I don’t like her.) Any other thoughts on how many other people they’ve interacted with were just plants? Finally being back to a place of absolute uncertainty is a great feeling as a fan of this show!

  7. Amazing review for an amazing episode Karen!!! I finally can say I enjoy my NCIS LA time this week!!! Yes we didn’t have any Densi scene but it was ok because everything else was great!!! Eco was amazing like usual, and how glad I was to finally watch Kensi back to her old self!! I missed her very much!!! The two weeks break are going to be awful… Unlike you, I would have enjoy to see Talia back… Because I love Mercedes Mason and she has great chemistry with Eco and Dani… I would have preferred to see her in a relationship with Callen instead of Anna… About Anna, how good it was to not have her on this episode…
As usual, love Wikideeks and I look forward to read all the reviews!!!

    • I tend to agree with you about Talia
I know she has some detractors, some because of her harassing actions and some because she is seen as a threat to Densi.
i am fine with her as long as she keeps her paws off deeks.
I think that her behavior was a catalyst for the Densi relationship moving forward to some extent.
kensi’s jealousy of her made kensi think about why she was jealous in the first place and address her feelings toward deeks. Talia’s behavior made kensi realize that Deeks’ attention and affection was something to be coveted and appreciated…not taken for granted. that he was desirable and not to assume that he would be just always be there. that there were other women that were interested in him as well.
it seemed like a good thing…a wake-up call so to speak….
….besides, she is a hell of a lot better than Anna/ Bar Paly.
      sick her on Callen.

I am with Karen on this, I cringed when I heard Talia’s name and I was happy she was not back and I was also glad we had an episode without Anna. One of my major complaints about Talia is that every scene she is in is about her, she makes herself the center of attention. So even though, every single member of the permanent cast is a much better actor/actress than her they are secondary and as a result most of those scenes are the weakest scenes in any episode. It would have been totally inappropriate to make the scene with DEA and Sam about anything other than Sam.. If Talia were in , it would have become about Talia. The actress clearly does not know how to play a secondary part. On the other hand the Anna character often plays a secondary character and the permanent cast member has center stage and owns the scene. So although I do not want to see either Talia or Anna, if I am forced to choose I will choose Anna every time.Anna in small doses is okay especially when she is playing a small role supporting a main character.

I understand that Anna may be more of a side dish…but she like having a prime rib with a side of dead rat…

as much as i dislike Talia…, Anna make me want to close my eyes so I dont have to look at the rigid posing and fake plastic smile…then her voice and the way she delivers her lines actually gives me a headache…
So, I close my eyes and plug my ears during her scenes…good solution, right… not so fast…
Unfortunately, her voice actually creates a sonic vibration that loosens my fillings and makes my teeth hurt.
I have to mute the TV or stand outside and look through the window to watch my favorite show.

maybe one of them will kill the other in a mole related shootout…or they take out each other…
          one can hope.

oh, and I do agree with your comments. Talia doesn’t bother me as much, but there is more of her in the scenes. the lesser of two evils? dont know which.is worse.
I guess I have had way too much Anna lately, and Talia has been in what, maybe 4 episodes total.

So Talia was actually in 5 episodes, and in my opinion she was in the two worst episodes of season 7; the worst epsiode of season 6; and two of the worst episodes of season 5. So for me, she has been in more bad episodes than Anna , so,perhaps I wrongly attribute the fact that she was the factor that caused them to be awful.

              • although neither one is on my Christmas list…
my level of dislike of Anna is actually in a class by itself.
while I am not a fan of Talia, I do think she pushed Kensi to act on her feelings.
as long as she keeps her paws off of Deeks, I guess I can deal with a little of her.
I do think she is a good actress and has some chemistry with Densi.
It is kind of funny to see Kensi get flustered and jealous over Talia’s attention towards Deeks.
Now, I don’t see Talia as a threat to Densi and think she just likes to get under Kensi’s skin.
The character and actress both could fit in occasionally. it is up to the writers to make her character likable to the fans. it is certainly possible.

                …on the other hand…
regardless of what the writers do with Anna, who isn’t very likable to most fans….
poor Bar is not ready for this type of roll and just doesn’t have the skills to pull it off.
it is an affront to the viewing public to have to witness the train wreck that is her attempt to blend in with the outstanding actors on this show.
She really stands out…and not in a good way.
Making her part of the moles and getting rid of her would be best for everyone involved.

Maybe she could get cast as the lead in a remake of the 1987 movie ” Mannequin”
she would be absolutely perfect for it.

maybe I can start a GO FUND ME account to get a script started and we can get her to audition.
we can call her back repeatedly for chemistry reads to keep her busy and away from our show.
                its worth a shot, right?

  8. Thank you Karen for writing great reviews! After a couple of disappointing episodes it feels like that the NCIS LA is back! This episode was great, and Yes Anastasia Kousakis did an excellent job as a writer, maybe because she wrote it more from viewer/fan point of view ?. As Karen mentioned next episode is written by R. Scott Gemmill and the challenges of continuing this story and I kind of wish that one and same writer had written everyone of these 3 mole investigation episodes.

I loved that Kensi is back and all the proposal talk. The only thing I really missed was that one good scene and talk between Kensi and Deeks, now the jump from previous episode to this felt too sudden, but it was a “positive jump” and the episode as a whole was great, so I didn’t get too frustrated about lack of Densi-scenes. I understand that writers and producers do these kind of jumps because of plot/storytelling , but this season there has been way too many (for example Kensi wheelchair-> walking, Callen and Anna romance, Nell/Eric in the field ..) I really hope we will get a good Kensi/Deeks talk and that IA case completely solved before the proposal .

Loved all the action, the whole team back in the ops and in the field, some great lines (“entire alphabet is after us “, “Kensi would make a terrible sister wife”..), great guest cast, Sam/Deeks and Hetty scenes were great.

I am still hoping that Anna has something to do with the mole and will get caught, even if it doesn’t look very probable right now. I , too, loved Anna-free episode, even if it did feel a bit strange that Nate and Anna weren’t helping the team when they really needed help.

I really want to know what will happen to Granger, will he survive or was the stabbing some kind of plot/faked to get him out of hospital (by Hetty?). Maybe my imagination runs a bit too wild.. These weeks will feel so long while waiting for next episodes 🙂

  9. I actually watched the episode, after hearing good things about it. It was great, maybe the second best of this year. No Anna, our whole favorite team was back, trying to help each other out. I also want to give a shout out to the guest actors, they were all great.
I do agree with your take on the 180 Kensi did with the the proposal talk, since the last few eps, in which it was portrayed that she didn’t want to be near Deeks. Hopefully the show is on the right track now.
Also wanted to add that I appreciate the time and effort you put into the reviews.

  10. It would not break my heart if Anastasia Kousakis wrote every episode from here on out. Wow! She obviously gets it and really delivered for the fans with this one. Amazing episode! I couldn’t believe when the To Be Continued flashed on the screen. The episode just flew by. Great writing, great directing, and great acting! I loved the returning characters, or at least the mention of them (Talia). Even though we did not get a scene with Kensi and Deeks together, we get the sense that all is good with them now. Loved Sam and Deeks’ bantering at the start. I think my favorite scenes were with Deeks and Whiting. Those two really butt heads and you can easily feel the tension between them. I also enjoyed the scenes between Hetty and Duggan – especially when it became apparent the mole was not his doing and he actually decided to help the team. Good stuff!

  12. Great review, Karen! Good point that Deeks could have just gone back and looked for Granger himself (and another great point from a reviewer who wrote that as a lawyer, Deeks also could have just said he was Granger’s counsel and asked to see him). The officer was clearly intentionally being difficult, as TV cops are wont to do in situations like these. So it’s entirely possible that even had Deeks done those things, he might not have found Granger. And I think we were meant to believe that he did claim to be his lawyer, b/c the officer confirmed as much to Kensi when she tried to see Deeks. Surprisingly, I didn’t even realize until my second viewing of the ep that there was no face to face Densi interaction (they were in ops together for all of 30 seconds), and I think that was b/c of all the proposal talk they both did. Why dd I have the feeling that as anxious as we are to have to wait two weeks now, the tension will be even higher after 8×14, and then we’ll have to wait 3 weeks!

Deeks and Sam’s response to Eric calling them to ops was good, playing off each other.
Kensi with the coma / heartstrings comment and her look was funny

A very possible scenario is that Eric or Nell overheard either directly or through the surveillance cameras in the Mission

There is a chance that Tiffany knows as well.
We never got the context around the shooting.
Did Tiffanie actually do the shooting? Did she see Deeks do it?
Was Tiffany there when it happened? Did Deeks actually pull Boyle off her and a struggle ensued? Did Deeks take away Boyle’s gun and have it go off.

She has a smile on her face like “what are you doing here?” and then he’s tasing her. Though I wondered what she was doing out in broad daylight like that when the agents are all being targeted. I suppose he could be doing it to protect her somehow, but I never really liked the Sullivan character, so I choose to assume the worst. Heh.

from the very time Sullivan showed up, used the word Bitch to describe Kensi, and made fun of Deeks…I have waited for the opportunity for Kensi and/ or Deeks to beat his ass. I cant stand the guy and his disrespectful attitude.
When he gets put in his place, I look forward to one or more of the following happening:
Kensi kicks him in the groin
          Kensi beats his ass
Deeks beats his ass when he rescues Kensi
Kensi shoots him in the groin
          Deeks shoots him
Kensi stabs him with her knife to escape.

          you get the idea.
with proper sequencing..several of the above could happen.
          lets hope.
          I am not picky…
I would even settle for Sullivan and Anna dying in a car crash, being hit by a bus, or even struck by lightning…Eric setting them on fire with a flare…. getting attacked by wolves or hyenas….

  29. Another excellent review, Karen, for the second (third) most exciting episode of the season after the premiere. It was so much more than I was expecting and as you said, it flew by so quickly and I was honestly breathless by the end. I actually said “wow” out loud. It was a complicated mix that kept me on my toes, and then that scene in the darkness of Granger getting stabbed. I was shocked by the unexpected violence of it. Brave storytelling that highlighted the true seriousness of what was happening. The speed of the assault on the members of the team gave them no time to assess or even breathe, and didn’t allow us to either. The complexity of the attack shows a dangerous enemy that definitely has it out for OSP, and maybe Hetty in particular. It is so much bigger than a lone mole leaking info. Why the CIA has it out for them I have no idea, unless it is a vendetta against Hetty or something that involves Callen and his father. Getting the team out of the way in order to get to Hetty might make sense, or Callen and his father have pissed off some people in high places. What is exciting is to look forward to the answers. I only hope they reveal who’s bodies were in the trunk of Sam’s car and in Callen’s garage. Callen was right…the forensics will exonerate him and Sam. So much to think about for two long weeks. Conspiracy theories anyone?

    • Figuring out the “why” is the key.
it almost has to be a vendetta against Hetty, or OSP…probably Hetty tho.
if it was against Callen, they likely would not have targeted all of them.

would it likely be Marcel Janvier or Matthias Draeger ??? I think it almost has to be.

  30. This was the kind of episode I had been looking forward to for a long time now and I’m glad it was written by a woman who had never written an NCIS:LA episode before. She has done so much better than other authors who often tend to lose track of what others (or themselves, which is even worse!) wrote in the past. I hope Anastasia Kousakis will be given the opportunity to write more episodes in the future if she can do so well with just one script.

I especially loved the way the episode kept on being fast-paced and breath-taking till the very end and I obviously loved Kensi back. I missed her so much! I’m still missing Deeks and Kensi in the field together but I have faith we’ll get them back where they belong when the mole arc is over.

I also have faith we’ll see another proposal by the end of the season. Better sooner than later, actually, or it may become a little boring to wait from week to week for something that never happens. I think getting engaged is such an important and life-changing step for Deeks and Kensi that I would like the writers to handle it with respect. I wouldn’t like this moment to become ridiculous only because it’s been dragged out too long and it must take place in an unpredictable way at all costs. Please, authors: don’t make Deeks’ proposal become another box.

    • I really agree with what you wrote about the engagement, The previous proposal scenes have been great so I have high hopes for that scene.
I hope the scene doesn’t take place when they are working (especially during a shooting scene or something like that) or to save Kensi from getting caught in that IA case.

    • I agree with you that I think we need the proposal sooner than later . Given that Deeks has proposed three times already, I guess what I would like to see, is a scene along the lines of the breakfast scene in Command and Control. I would Deeks to be stressing over making the proposal perfect, in the perfect place, and Kensi saying to to him you are all I want, and have her propose to him. I think that would be a perfect way for her character to show how much she appreciates and loves him.

      Like

      • I’d like a scene similar to that breakfast scene, too. I like the reasoning for you suggesting Kensi propose, but I would like for Deeks to be the one to propose because I want him to hear a resounding yes from Kensi. I think he deserves to ask the question and hear a YES!

Although if Kensi proposes it’s ok too. As long as they’re officially engaged.

it is almost like she did her homework and went back to see what had happened before.
something the long time writers seem to take for granted occasionally and miss-remember from time to time. if she writes half the episodes from here on out, I wouldn’t mind a bit.
      outstanding.

and you are right about the box…
they waited so long that it is hard to see what could be in it that mattered back then and is still relevant now.
      a key to her apartment,
a note saying “the answer is yes” or “I love you”
A “reservation” for a birthday dinner for life…

      any other ideas

  37. Karen, Thank you for an excellent and enthusiastic review.
I desperately tried to post my comment several times
and sent it through the “contact us” section, and I have
edited it now as I noticed I had made several mistakes.
For my part, this episode kept me riveted to the screen.
I dearly hope that Anastasia Kousakis continues to write
for the show. And she definitely has created an extremely
desperate and dramatic situation with the team and NCIS under siege.
I was so glad and relieved to see Kensi (though inofficially) back
in the field. The situation jolted her back into action and I think
that Daniela was outstanding. As she and Deeks only shared a few
seconds of screentime, and there was no time to talk because
of the extreme urgency of the situation. I loved how for Kensi
and Deeks the proposal etc. was addressed in their separate
scenes with the desk officer at LAPD. Eric Christian was equally
outstanding in all of his scenes both those with Detective Whiting
and those alone. I also agree that she is an interesting and intelligent
opponent. And I will be very interested to see how Deeks’s case will
be resolved. As well as that I think that the moles have also definitely
    infiltrated the LAPD.

Does the person or group who is/are behind all of this intend to destroy either Hetty
    or NCIS completely?
With Granger at the ICU and the team and NCIS in such a desperate situation. Would it be
not appropriate for Leon Vance to make a visible appearance and send reinforcements from
Washington? Now that Miguel has passed away, I do not think that Granger could be
replaced as a character. I will miss him.
When Hetty and Deeks talked about his “Internal Affairs” case did someone overhear them?
Are Nell or Eric among the moles, as they possess all the knowledge to access very
private information and cover their tracks? For instance, when Duggan took over during
the season’s premiere, Nell downloaded something on the computer..
I noticed that the cast list for “Under Siege” includes Sharov, he was also
in “Matryoshka” during the previous season. What is his part in all of this?

The way he portrayed Owen Granger and the way he had made us all love his character more and more (not due to the authors’ scripts but to his own outstanding way of giving life to the character) was unique. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace.

As a tribute to Miguel and the amazing character of Owen Granger, I wish in the future here at Wikideeks we could have a post in the Top Three feature dedicated to the many memorable scenes in which he interacted with the team (how could we forget his awesome moments with Hetty?), especially Kensi and Deeks (this season we were given the wonderful opportunity to see one of the most beautiful moments between these two characters ever, in the gym, in a heart-to-heart conversation) and the awesome progression of Granger’s character from Season 3 Assistant Director to Season 8 friend and part of the team and family.

On Broadway the lights go dark when losing an actor; so tonight NCISLA goes dark in honor of Miguel. Yes, I know this wasn’t planned; but the timing is good for us to reflect, pray, whatever for Miguel’s family and NCISLA family.

Granger started off as a character I couldn’t even look at (thanks in no small part to the way Lindy AKA Sweet Lu portrayed him as an evil villain in some of her stories). But he wormed his way into my heart with his deadpan humor. Granger – and Miguel – will be very missed.

Because I would like to offer my apologies that
my comment in two parts in response to Karen’s
review was posted among the comments which
    commemorate Miguel’s passing.
But I had a frustrating time in trying to post a
comment. And after several attempts these
    finally got through.
    ******
I still suspect that Miguel may have had a lot of
influence in how Granger’s character developed.
As the trust between Granger and the team grew, his
support as a father figure for Deeks was wonderful,
not speak of how he would gently smile when Nell
and Eric practiced their dance routine or his intimate
conversations with Hetty. And his touching scene
with Kensi’s mom Julia at the hospital.
Miguel’s death changes the NCIS: Los Angeles family and
    the characters irrevocably.
    Owen Granger is simply irreplaceable!
    ******
Ed, I would like to respond to what you said in several of
    your comments upthread.
I think that Sullivan was planted at the hospital neither to help
nor to protect Kensi but observe, challenge her and assess exactly
her physical- and psychological strength and how dangerous
    she could become.
And if Michelle would turn out to be a double agent, it would be
a very interesting situation. But it would be heartwrenching for
Sam and shock him to the core.

funny enough I have been on this tangent and we have discussed it over several episodes to the point I had to go back and look at what I actually said this time.
      Sullivan,
he had to be a plant of some kind from the beginning. no one would call someone a bitch 10 words into a conversation when first meeting them unless you already knew the reaction you would get from a profile or briefing. rehab was a great way to get into her life.
there is no way he could have known what deeks was like unless he was briefed before hand or observed and did not admit it. either way..not cool.

after the food fight incident, Sullivan had a very odd look on his face as kensi and deeks left to go eat. once they turned away, you could see the smile kind of wash from Sullivan’s face and be replaced by a …
I cant find the right word. he was observing, the emotion had left, it was kind of a blank stare.
I always thought the visit to the house was for recon, plant bugs and cameras ect.

as far as Michelle goes, i had this feeling that it had to come through Sam somehow.
either Michelle herself or through Joelle. it would fit for a sleeper of some sort or a CIA opp.

my reasoning is part observation and part just wishful thinking.
from the very beginning Sam has been cast as this guy, that is the best judge of character on the planet. Hetty, Granger, Callen,Nate and others all have a far better background on profiling than Sam does. yet, some how he always argues and wins with being the only one in the group that is smart enough to know the truth about these people. it could be a former or current seal, a former partner, some kid like Mo, Jada, someone he brought back from overseas, or someone he just met…
at time he comes off as overconfident, arrogant and condescending in his” i am right and you just dont get it” attitude.
I like Sam most of the time, but it is one of his least likable traits.

the way he will react and feel betrayed is why having the mole get to the team through him would be so perfect.
he brought this person into the group.
after all his speeches about tradecraft and so on…
all his, ” I know this guy, trust me” speaches…
      it’s Sam’s fault…
either it is his own wife…or he dropped Joelle into Callen’s life with his seal of approval
wouldn’t that be a hell of a twist.
      priceless

If Joelle is the mole we will get some great scenes where Anna comforts Callen 🙂 just kidding, at least I hope so..
Michelle could be a mole too, but if she is I believe there are more than one mole. When Sam returned to Africa and interrogated Tahir I think Tahir mentioned (or it was implied) that the mole gave Tahir information about Sam’s family (including children and that is how he later found Aiden’s school) and even if Michelle is the mole I don’t think she would put her children in danger and give that information to Tahir.

  47. I think the person behind this has several moles, quite likely more than 2 even.
as far as Michelle goes, do we know if the kids were even in real trouble???
or was it a plan to smoke out Sam and the team possibly/
and without regard for my own life and risk of being shot at…
Is Aden even Sam’s kid? when the topic first came up, wasn’t Aden something like 6 years older than the supposed date that sam and Michelle met on that task force?
either is is really big for his age and quite the overachiever…or he cant possibly be Sam’s kid.
that or Michelle and Sam are lying to the team about when they met.
the only other option is that the showruners can’t do basic math.
Didn’t someone bring this up several years ago? like after Humbug, or even before.
does anyone know what episode that was in and add it up.?…. isn’t Aden something like 13 ,14? according to what the team was originally told…and that assumes Sam got her pregnant immeadiatly after they met…
something doesn’t add up at all
there is a lie or a con going on…
    I smell a rat..

    oh, almost forgot…

    • According to canon, in “Rude Awakenings” which was Nov 2012 ( so season 4) Sam and Michelle met and fell in love 8 years before, working side by side, on a task force. So there is no way that the Aiden who appeared in Humbug ( season 6, 2014) was Sam and Michelle’s biological child . So either he is Sam’s son or Michelle’s son from a previous relationship. So Aiden could be an interesting twist in the story.

  49. Ed,

All of your points concerning Michelle, Joelle, Sam and Aiden
are thought-provoking and excellent. Although Sam is one of
my favourite characters, I definitely agree with what you said
about how they have always portrayed Sam as the best judge
of character, and how hurt he would be in case of betrayal.
My head also explodes with all the possibilities. And I still
think that the person or group behind all of this either wants
to destroy either Hetty or the team completely. I also suspect
that the conclusion of the mole(s) storyarc will be achieved at
great- and extreme cost for the team.As well as that I suspect that it
might be possible that Hetty will sacrifice herself in the conclusion
    of this storyarc.
The writers have definitely succeeded in throwing the viewers totally
off balance. I also think that with this mole(s) storyarc or at least
with its aftermath, there would be a good and interesting opportunity for a
    crossover with the mother series.

  50. it is kind of hard to guess where this winds up.
my thought has been that the original plan was to have hetty sacrifice herself to save the team, likely dying in a standoff with the mastermind behind all this.
that could leave her protege, Nell to step up. this worked better if Granger was to stay around to oversee the team. I don’t thing the original plan was for he and Hetty to both leave the show.
Obvious health issues led to a change in plan as Miguel’s health unfortunately deteriorated.
I am still very sad, he was a great guy, a wonderful actor and his character slowly became one of my favorites.
