Review: NCISLA “Queen Pin” (S8E17)

I’m excited to be doing my first episode review for wikiDeeks! Karen P does such a good job with the reviews, so there are big shoes to fill. Hopefully I can live up to the high bar she has set!

I have found a number of this season’s episodes to be OK, but not thrilling, so I was a little concerned about what I would write if the episode was underwhelming. Luckily, this turned out to be one of my favorite episodes of the year so far, so no shortage of comments for the review. “Queen Pin” was directed by Eric Laneuville and written by one of my favorite writers, Joseph C. Wilson, so not really surprising that I ended up really enjoying this episode.

Anna is Back

I agreed to do the review before I saw that Bar Paly was one of the guest cast – I learned that tidbit just before the show aired. I completely understand that a lot of fans, including many on this site, don’t like her. I recognize I’m in the minority here, but I don’t mind her. I’m not a huge Callen fan so I happen to think they are a good (if messed up) pair.

I was planning to minimize her appearance in this review out of respect for those who are not Anna/Bar Paly fans. And then…second scene into the episode and it’s Anna and Callen on the floor in front of the fireplace! I actually had to hit pause so I could laugh out loud – so much for ignoring Anna! When I resumed watching, my Densi fan heart quickly got annoyed that we have never seen a Densi scene that was that hot.

How does self-proclaimed-loner-with-massive-attachment-and-abandonment-issues-Callen have more hot love scenes in NCIS:LA canon than Densi?! I will confess, before they were “all in” I was of the “Just get them together, we don’t need relationship in the foreground all the time” crowd. But come on, everyone else sees some onscreen action, except Deeks & Kensi? Thankfully, before I could get too irritated, Hetty barged in – “I tried to call” – and made me laugh again. I still haven’t totally forgiven her for transgressions past but scenes like that certainly help. I laughed out loud at the wicked smirk that followed her “Anna, dear…”. If Densi doesn’t get fireplace floor action except in fanfics, then neither should Anna! Get dressed and go get that terrorist!

Clearly the intent of this “road trip to get Asakeem” storyline was to re-introduce him for future episodes. But even for someone who doesn’t mind Anna, it did eventually seem as if the main purpose of the trip was to insert some Callen/Anna (?Canna, ? Allen – sorry, can’t do it!) couple time in prolonged foreplay that was so blatant even Asakeem noticed! Don’t even get me started on the making out in the boatshed scene. In the end I think this exchange captures it best: “I was just…” “TMI dear.” TMI indeed!

Badass Sam

While our beloved Marty Deeks has shown his dark side as “Max Gentry,” I have always thought that Sam was the team member who is best able to embody truly dark undercover personas in a very edgy way, and he showed us that side of him again in this episode. Whether it was his interaction with Taylor in the boatshed – “this isn’t checkers, it’s chess”, “murdering” Taylor on the dock “as gangster as that was…” or turning on his buddy Champ and robbing him, he was as dark and dangerous as the last time he used the “Switch” persona with drug lord Tyler Brunson (played by Stephen Wozniak) in “Three Hearts.”

He embraces the badass characters so well that I sometimes wonder if he wouldn’t be the member of the team most likely to cross the line one day. His Navy SEAL training helps him keep a tight lid on himself, but sometimes that over-controlled exterior exists for a reason, to mask what lies beneath. LL Cool J really does a masterful job of taking his portrayal of Sam from his usual baseline tough, but good and kind-hearted, guy and kicking it up a notch to show that dangerous, hard edge that is icy cold and controlled.

What didn’t quite make sense to me was why this was their case and not LAPD, since it was drug dealing and not a terrorism or a homeland security threat. Eric references “King” using civilian naval contractors to smuggle drugs from overseas (presumably creating the Navy connection) and Sam previously shutting down the pipeline but not catching “King.” He also says that Sam created “Switch” for that op. However, “Three Hearts” is the only prior time we have seen him use that persona that I can recall. I re-watched “Three Hearts” just to be sure, and it certainly seemed like he created “Switch” on the fly then as he was rolling up to Brunson’s house. Despite Eric saying that “Switch” was created for Sam’s quest to find “King,” there is no reference to “King” in “Three Hearts”. Brunson was believed to be using Navy ships for smuggling chemical weapons and then turned out to be trafficking Krododil, not cocaine like “King” (not that drug lords can’t be diversified in their businesses), so there is a vague parallel there, but also very clear differences. It also seems implausible that Sam would have the time to maintain “Switch’s” rep and street cred sufficiently that “King” (or “Queen”) had heard of him and “Champ” at the jewelry store knew him. I realize these are subtle inconsistencies within the context of the larger storyline, but I always wish the writers would avoid them. I’m willing to work as a script consistency consultant!

Densi Scenes

Despite my initial annoyance at the fireplace scene that started the episode, the main reason I ended up really enjoying this episode was that so many of the Densi scenes just felt like vintage Densi – but an evolved version where they are committed and open with each other. I haven’t been able to put my finger on it enough to comment on prior episodes, but too often it felt like there was something missing.

Joe Wilson has written some great Densi content in the past (“Personal“, “Plan B“) and it felt like he tapped into the things I really enjoy about the characters. From their opening chat about getting up “on a SURFBOARD! What are YOU talking about?” to Kensi saying “I love you” and kissing him at work and then Deeks asking Hetty for his motorcycle back (poor guy, still not over it), it just felt like the kind of interactions that have been missing in many episodes this season. Perhaps that was intentional because of the storyline with Kensi’s recovery, but I missed the sweet and fun interactions, not to mention those scenes that make it clear their relationship is on solid footing.

Since Deeks so often endures ribbing from the others, he had a well-deserved hero role in rescuing Taylor after “Switch” tossed him off the dock. And their emergence from the water was classic Deeks: “He’s alive!!” followed by “Actually I AM a lawyer.” While he has all the sympathy in the world for people in difficult circumstances, he clearly has zero sympathy for drug dealers who are creating harm in his city and he let him know what he thought about his life choices.

I also loved the interactions in the van while they were backing Sam up in overwatch.

Kensi: Hi, handsome.
Deeks: Foxy Lady. I’ve got your two favorite treats, chocolate chip cookies and chips.

It was so sweet, and so natural. They’ve had some amazing scenes (and arguments) involving food and stakeouts. Deeks knows Kensi needs food for a stakeout and he’s prepared with her faves! So adorable.

At the same time, Deeks is still upset about what happened to Kensi because of Asakeem and Callen’s trip to bring him to LA reminds him of all of that. He’s thinking of “a thousand ways to crush Asakeem.” Yet, he’s saying it without visible anger. Anger has been described as secondary emotion – often a response to fear. With Deeks it is clear that his care and concern for her is the deep primary emotion driving his desire to deal with Asakeem. And, what is really important is that he is able to express it.

Kensi on the other hand has moved on and feels nothing towards Asakeem or Sullivan because “I have you, that’s all I care about,” followed by a spontaneous kiss in the van, leaving Deeks with the sweetest smile. Deeks responds by saying she’s more evolved than he is, but they both have really grown. Their banter was the cute and fun style I had missed, but this was definitely not the Deeks of seasons past when he couldn’t say what he meant or the Kensi who kept pulling away when things got intense.

Although I would still have written them in front of the fireplace instead of Anna and Callen (please writers, if you’re reading – hint hint!!), I think this scene is just as important as a fireplace scene would have been. It’s not just that their relationship has really deepened, they are able to talk openly, honestly, and naturally about their deep feelings and this Densi fan is thrilled!

Memorable Moments:

  • “It happens to everyone. I know some herbs that can help.” Umm…Eric? Why do you know about the herbs? Maybe a little TMI there?
  • Detective Whiting is out of ICU? And she’s more stubborn than Hetty?! Oh no!! Deeks knows this can’t be good. Ominous foreshadowing for what lies ahead for him. I’m hoping for amnesia of his confession induced by the trauma of the shooting and hypotension from blood volume loss. Who thinks she’ll remember? Who thinks she will persist in her crusade?
  • First Callen cut up his table and now he’s thrown out his bed? “Trying to get back to the old me.” I think Joelle really got to him. And Hetty thinks he’s going to need a new bed. LOL. I’ll admit it, after all the times she’s done stuff like that to Densi, I had a serious case of schadenfreude watching her toss zingers at them.
  • “I’m King. You’re about to help me become a queen.” – I thought that was impressive. Nice plot twist. I was pretty sure the smarmy DA and his assistant were somehow involved in the drug dealing, but I was not anticipating this twist.
  • I did enjoy Anna and Callen singing show tunes, badly and off-key, in the car, leaving Asakeem wondering “So this is a new form of American torture?” And a little later:
Callen and Anna in unison: You’re the one that I want! Ooh, ooh.
    Callen: Come on Asakeem!
Car drives around a bend in the road, taking Asakeem with it!
That was funny – and one of their few non-sexual scenes! I wonder if tormenting him with show tunes was one of the 1000 ways Deeks thought of to crush Asakeem. I can see him loving that sing-song on the highway. Hopefully Callen tells him.

Well folks, that’s all I’ve got for you. Come back later this week for the Surf Log, Kensi’s Journal, and the Drabble of the Week. In the meantime, what did you think of “Queen Pin”? Were you annoyed by Anna or did you find some humor in their scenes? Did you enjoy the sweet Densi scenes as much as I did? What do you think Whiting is going to do when she’s back at work – is Deeks in trouble?

  1. Nicely done! And I totally agree: Callanna got more action in this ep than Densi has in the entire run of the show thus far. Great observations, particularly about the creation of the Switch persona and how much Callen really seems to have been impacted by Joelle’s betrayal. It really was nice to see a mature Densi sharing their feelings with each other; they’ve come along way, baby! (Now all he has to do is tell her about his confession to Whiting.) I do have to respectfully disagree with your assessment that Sam might be the team member most likely to cross the line one day: Deeks already has. And yes, it looks like that might come back and bite him in the a$$ again. Wondering if this might lead to a Deeks, M ep at the end of the season, or early S9?

    • I would not be surprised at all if the last ep of the season is Deeks-centric, he proposes to Kensi, and promptly gets arrested by IA for the cliffhanger to end the season…

not necessarily what I want, just a thought.

      Thanks for your feedback!
I know what you mean about Deeks, he clearly did something that crossed a line. But I feel like he killed his partner out of a “good” motivation and he hasn’t done anything like that again, so it seems different. But point taken, he has a murder on his hands.

      • We still don’t have the whole story of what happened when he shot Boyle. I for one believe he did it in a fight to save Tiffany’s life. So, I don’t call it a murder in cold blood. But, until we hear the whole story in detail we will all just have our own thoughts about what happened.

I agree. I think you can “cross a line” – but circumstances can justify it. I know he has confessed to the action, but I also choose to believe there was a justifiable explanation, so I don’t view it as evidence of a character flaw. I think it arose out of his protective instincts. But you’re right, without details, we each get to have our own view.

          • I would like to think that Deeks was in a physical altercation with Boyle when he shot him or that he was actively hurting Tiffany at the time. But alas, we will have to wait and see.

but , we cant loose site of the fact that this team crosses the line all the time, rules of engagement, escalation of force, use of deadly force…they do it all the time.
It would be a shame to just focus on Deeks.

There is a different standard applied. Since they have all done it, I will use this for a reference.
Look at the normal criteria that law enforcement needs to follow tho justify use of deadly force.
It is pretty strict, right. I will leave out the specifics to avoid being bogged down.

Now, look at a sniper,..like Kensi, but she isn’t the only one, right…

A sniper is often concealed at a distance and out of site. in the process of doing their job, they often fire at someone without announcing themselves, telling the suspect to freeze,or identifying themselves as law enforcement.
They do this, quite frequently, when not only are they themselves not threatened, but when the bad guy is not an immediate and direct threat to their team or anyone else.
they shoot , preemptively for the greater good, or to reduce the amount of resistance the team will face by taking out the guards and lookouts….
every time you see a law enforcement agency, operating inside this country…just taking out a bunch of guards that havent fired at them first or even been instructed to surrender, it would likely be considered a crime….possibly

you can’t just going around shooting bad guys whenever you want…
then again, we wouldn’t have a show either…
so lets just continue with the belief that the bad guys have it coming and Deeks did it for the right reasons…
            at least that’s my thought…

if we want to start following the law…everyone on the team would be in prison…
then I would have to watch more cat videos on the internet instead…
            and nobody wants that…

  2. Thanks for the review, great job. I actually liked this episode, Anna aside. I fast forward her scenes so no harm no foul. I did watch the shoot out with her in it and I liked that the diner guys helped out. I liked the case and the actress who played King. Shallow note: I loved her white lace top. Sam’s cover was highlight too.
The biggest highlight for me were the Deeks and Kensi scenes. They were actually allowed to have sweet simple romantic scenes, without violence. I actually believed that Kensi wanted to be in the relationship, this week. When those two or written and portrayed well, their chemistry is so natural. I do feel there was some major foreshadowing, in the van when Kensi said, “….as long as I have you.” I feel that something bad is gonna happen.

Glad you liked the review. But now you have me wondering about foreshadowing. It does seem like whenever they’re happy, something does happen. I’m going to live in denial and hope for the fireplace scene 😉

  3. Great review, well done. I do think that Deeks will be the first to officially cross the line with all that rage he carries.
Trouble is Kensi and Deeks are already evolved and disgustingly stable in their relationship. Callen and Anna are starting out and the scenes also show how Callen is regressing in some ways (but still keen to jump ‘all in’ albeit in a different way to Kensi and Deeks).
There were some fantastic scenes between the two of them and now they’ve been reunited after injury and the mole they are finally getting quality scenes together.
And yes, Whiting is a threat hat will hang over Deeks’ head until maybe S9.
Deeks may get a chance to get face to face with. Asakeem…I’m guessing for the season finale.

  4. Great job with the review!

I was afraid I would not care for this episode, so I was pleasantly surprised once we got past the Callen/Anna moment at the beginning. Hetty interruptus…quite hilarious how that played out, I thought. I didn’t even mind the singing in the car. Okay, so it did have that “nails on a chalkboard” effect, I’ll admit, but it was still comical. I’m definitely not an Anna fan, though. I couldn’t help but think about Ed while watching her scenes and wondering if he was trying to poke his mind’s eye out.

I enjoyed that we got a callback to Deeks’ motorcycle. I was surprised that Whiting’s condition was addressed, and the possibilities that brings for future story lines. I like what you pointed out about the Densi scenes; vintage, yet evolved. I couldn’t agree more.

Sam was convincing with his Switch persona, but I also agree with the inconsistency of that cover’s backstory.

All in all a great episode, one of my favorites of the season so far.

  5. Great job, Brenda.

The passionate scene I had been hoping for finally came along…but with the wrong two people. Personally, I thought it was cheesy. The shirt ripping and tossing felt forced and wow, would I like to see a scene like that between Kensi and Deeks. Now that would be hot. Callanna was not. And the singing in the car was a sad attempt to show how cute they were with each other and it just didn’t work for me at all. OhBuddy was right…”nails on chalkboard”, not to mention stupid. I thought it was totally out of character for Callen. End of rant!

I was pleasantly surprised when Whiting was mentioned. I’ve been waiting for the continuation of that storyline. I still believe she will give him an ultimatum about his confession and it will be to resign from the LAPD. That will leave him free to become an agent and would be a nice end to the whole Boyle problem. It’s the only reason I can come up with for why he would confess to her after she was shot.

The Densi scene in the van was my favorite of the night. Kensi was so sweet to him, realizing he hadn’t let go of what Asakeem had done to her. Her declaration of love and the sweet kiss was lovely. Now all we need is a proposal scene…and it better not happen off camera or I will have to join Ed in poking an eye out.

I agree with the car singing being out of character with Callen. I thought of including it, but didn’t want to end up ranting too much about Callanna/Anallen. Glad others have filled in some of those blanks!

  6. Thanks Brenda for your interesting review!

The episode and its multiple subplots worked quite well, in my opinion (I enjoyed the Sam scenes, for example), and the final result was good, not overwhelming but better than other Season 8 episodes I didn’t like very much (like Kulinda or Sirens or Tidings we bring). So it was a welcome surprise.

Something continues to seem off to me, though. I don’t know why, really, I don’t. I’m still trying to figure it out. It’s just a feeling, a sensation, a vibe . Something not easy to define, but it’s there and it’s been bothering me more or less since Kensi’s final recovery and first episodes back. As if the authors had found it difficult to reintegrate Kensi’s character in the stories and plots. As if, forcing Anna in, they had to find a new balance for everyone in the team.
And the same is for Densi, in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, I liked their interactions this week, their scenes and how well they worked together, it’s very reassuring they are in a good place and love each other, they were tender, sweet, romantic and loving, and finally Kensi said the magic words (“I have you and that’s all I care about”) I had wanted her to say since she recovered. But Deeks and Kensi together have something off, too, that I can’t completely understand (maybe a proper kiss after so many months of angst – instead of always avoid the other’s mouth on purpose – would do the trick, wouldn’t it?).

Then, as the icing on the cake, we have completely out-of-character, unrecognizable Callen who spends a whole episode making out with Anna like a teenager. I don’t even want to talk about it, or better, I can’t, since I’m speechless! I only hope Callen’s character won’t be ruined forever because of this new addition. I get the authors wanted to find a love interest for him, but I didn’t think it meant this kind of “regression” for the character he had always been. Maybe something more gradual would have been easier to digest. Just saying.
    Thanks again for your review.

  7. Great review Brenda. I have to agree, the opening scene with Callen and Anna should have been a Densi scene. It seems they don’t get the “hot” scenes but show a more developed and mature relationship in their scenes. Sam seems to show a dark side when he has to, which makes him a great agent. Deeks, on the other hand, seems to lose it rather easily when it comes to someone he’s very protective of, like Tiffany or Kensi. Since Whiting is alive, this might prove detrimental to the Densi relationship (I hope not).

Now this is very important: somebody must contact Ed, for I fear the Anna scenes might have killed him.

  9. Great review! I totally agree about Anna she is not my favorite either and Callen have had just in a few episodes more hot kisses than Densi ever had in eight seasons. What am I saying they have never had o really hot kiss just sweet kisses and lately just on the head or cheek. But I did like the episode even if I didn’t think it was the one of the better ones. But you put the dot over the i (like we say in Sweden, don’t ask me why).

Brenda, great review, I really enjoyed it.

I had low expectations for this episode but I was pleasantly surprised . I thought it was very good. It was a great Sam centric episode , he was just perfect. I thought the actress who played “King” did a superb job and had great chemistry with LL Cool J. I liked the Deeks and Kensi scenes, they have chemistry and humor and their subtle touches are enough to keep us Densi fans happy. At least for me their subtle touches have far more chemistry than any scene with Callen and Anna, who for me have no chemistry.

I am one of those who is glad Detective Whiting is alive, I think this could make for an interesting storyline. I thought that Eco and Karina Logue had some very well acted scenes between them, so I look forward to more of those.

I think the Asakeem subplot could have been interesting but it was ruined by misplaced attempts at humor. I really found myself embarrassed for Chris O’Donnell in the  Danny and Sandy scene. I just kept thinking the Asakeem subplot would have been good if we partnered Callen with Sam or of course if Callen were partnered with Granger. I do miss Miguel.

  11. Nice first review Brenda… even if i disagree with some of the things you said.

I’m one of the wikideeks crazy fans who dislike Anna very much. But, I had decided before the beginning of this episode to give her a second (no, third, maybe more?) chance… And I failed… I’m sorry… First this first scene… I don’t mind sexy scene like that but I don’t need them… It just, I would have prefer to see Densi instead of Anna and Callen (I can’t say or write Call…a or whatever their name is!!!) and I found myself fast forward this scene until Hetty appears… and this thumbs up from Anna was the only scene I have liked with her… (Is it weird if we didn’t see her except her arm in this scene…? lol) And can we talk about this carpool scene? OMG… It was so painful to watch… and just after this beautiful, perfect scene from Dani and ECO… What a mess… I was so disapointed… My ears still hurt… I didn’t see the funny thing in this scene, it was so bad IMO. And I had just watch the first two seconds lol. But enough of Anna, I don’t want to talk about the Boatshed scene… 😉

Now the rest of the episode… I liked Sam storyline, it was great, well played and interesting… And I don’t have enough memory to be confused about the Switch character. Eric was so funny with Deeks in their scene… It was an inaproporiate discussion at work even if he didn’t know Kensi and Deeks was talking about surf… Hilarious.

And Densi… Finally, their are back… I missed them very much… and those scenes, so perfect… But I think Deeks was more upset with Whiting recovery (and what it means to him) instead of Asakeem… He is obviously angry about him but it seems like he worried more about his futur and what that mean to them… I think he don’t want to worried Kensi but she said “no secret” last year, so Deeks, it’s time to tell the truth…
I truly hope we’ll see Deeks forced to resign from LAPD to become an agent… and not more. Fingers crossed…
Ed are you still alive? 😉

I was pleased to see that Whiting is likely going to make it. I thought ECO did a great job in his scenes. The vulnerability shown and not picked up on by those around him. I am so happy with Kensi and Deeks scenes. I am so disappointed that we have not seen Densi the same sexy way. I thought the singing in the car would have been a great Densi scene. I wonder who the big bad is? So many options, wonder about Janiver. I agree that all the changes have i.pacted the vibe. I missed Miguel.

The handsome and pretty lady comments are what we need more of.
It is those little touches that make a world of difference.
That greeting did not take any longer than a standard hi partner would have, but means a lot to some of the fans and shows a strong bond without much effort.
I hope we get more of that. It shows a nice progression it the relationship.

  22. Watching the Callen / Anna scene, I could not help but feel jealous for how long it took Kensi and Deeks, what they had to go through personally, at work, their boss, and from the team themselves.
Then, just full speed ahead for these two…
I guess nobody thinks getting too close to your partner is a problem any more…nice to know, nice to know…

Sam was vocal that he did not like it, but Kensi and Deeks made the team better, so he would tolerate it… so he must think Anna brings something to the team???

  23. How is it that Anna never seems to have a job to go to, yet Hetty recruits her all the time.
Don’t you think her boss would have actually sent her a text at some point confirming the assignment, or at least that it was ok to work with NCIS for a while.

I would be having one of those “who signs your paycheck” discussions with her over the freelancing and on loan issue at some point…
One would thing that you would check with your boss before just going to work for some other company for a while… but maybe that’s just me…
I really wish her boss could keep her busy for a while.

    • I think she’s waiting to hear if someone hires her…the DEA I think. Love to see her go head to head with Talia…my money’s on her. She would eat Anna alive. My question is…if she’s so good, why is the DEA taking so long to hire her. Wait! Have you been texting them about her, Ed? Make her sound so good they take her off our hands. In truth, I’m wondering if the showrunner is taking the pulse of the fandom and waiting to see if we like her, and in hopes that she will grow on us like Granger did.

yes, Granger was not well liked by a lot of fans at first, but then he wasn’t supposed to be.
he was a potential threat to the team and an outsider..

that being said, the issue was with the situation only.
I don’t think, that even back at the start, that anyone would question that the Granger character was a well constructed, deep, complex character that was portrayed perfectly by a wonderfully talented actor.

Deeks getting the news made me think here we go again.
    Then, sure enough…
Prepare for the latest addition of the relationship flip flop.
Deeks being stressed by the uncertainty of the whole thing is understandable, but seeing his lack of enthusiasm around Kensi’s actions was troubling.
I know now he thinks that he might not be there for her. I get that.
But, we endure months of a moody, brooding, depressed Kensi.

  25. With the way Deeks reacted to Kensi’s statement and kiss, it made me wonder.
    Has He told her yet…
Would Kensi be as okay and accepting of the things that happened if she knew Hetty was behind it all.
That Hetty got Deeks arrested and leaked info on Tiffany to IA.
What Deeks had to promise Whiting to get out so he could rescue Kensi.
What he actually told Whiting…(which was dumb by the way…the deal was get Kensi, then confess…No Kensi, no confession, sorry if you didn’t get to the finish line…that’s the breaks…)

I wonder if Kensi would feel the same way if she knew what was put at risk by Hetty?
It appears that Deeks might have left out a lot of what happened.
If so, the no more secrets rule might bite him in the butt.
Kensi could be pissed at him for keeping it from her…

And I agree, I don’t think Deeks has told Kensi about his confession and/or about her recovery; to me it was clear in his response to her affections. I believe (as someone stated earlier) that added to his general unhappiness about Asakeem. But I’m hopeful that all that time on over watch of Nell and Eric in the next ep will give Deeks the opportunity to share the bad news with his ladybird.

That with so much at stake and knowing that she caused all of it, that Hetty would not be quite so cavalier about Whiting recovering.
I mean, Deeks is guilty, she brought Tiffany into the picture, and there is no reason to think that the investigation would not continue.
You would think she would show a little more concern.

    • I’d like to believe that Hetty has some sort of solution up her sleeve, but I’d also like to believe in Santa Claus. Because you are absolutely right, Deeks is guilty and Hetty knows this, and she chose to give IAB more evidence that could be used against him. That said, I happen to be in the camp that believes Deeks did not kill Bolye in immediate defense of Tiffany’s life (meaning I don’t think she was in the room or her life was in immediate danger, because then why wouldn’t Deeks have just told the truth from the get-go if it was so clearly justifiable in the eyes of the law? Though I also don’t believe it was cold-blooded or pre-meditated), so Tiffany could probably pass a lie detector test and not harm or be used against Deeks in that way. However, the money he has paid her can and would certainly be interpreted as pay-offs for Tiffany keeping quiet, so Deeks is still in legal and professional jeopardy thanks to Hetty.

But then again, if Hetty really did have something to “clear” Deeks, wouldn’t she have used it by now, even with Whiting in the hospital? I mean, she can’t be the only IAB detective at LAPD. Perhaps she assumed Deeks would be able to avoid any actual repercussions because she knows Tiffany has nothing to testify to and a lawyer could easily argue (truthfully) that Deeks was just helping the young woman out with the money. Certainly it’s not Hetty’s fault that Deeks confessed to Whiting in a moment of compassion/insanity. Just like it’s not her fault that Kensi didn’t listen to her and stay at the mission like she was told, instead of running out to get abducted by Sullivan/Ferris. [/sarcasm font, just in case]

      Like

      • sarcasm noted…
with just a small touch of honesty and trust in her team, all of this could have been avoided.
Kensi and Nell wouldn’t have thought the guys were in trouble and needed rescued.which wouldn’t have put them in a position to feel the need to rescue them. so then Kensi doesn’t get captured, deek’s Doesn’t make a deal, Deeks., Whiting doesnt get shot, Deeks doesn’t confess.
Hetty’s secrecy, deception and lack of trust in her team started this big hairball rolling.
If Kensi Nell and Eric know the truth, they react differently, right.
if Deeks knows the truth, he acts differently, right…

And, Just like with Jack in Come Back…there was absolutely no reason to to withhold the information from the team except just to play a game and see how they react.

These are not normal people in a normal job.
They weren’t told to finish their report on time or not to play with the copier.
They are a bunch of highly trained and skilled people who are expected to survive by being able to adapt to changes, improvise, make decisions under stress and so on.
it is immensely easier to follow orders, that could be outdated, when you have all the information and you know the plan. Actually being in touch with a leader that actually communicates these things might be a small step in the right direction…

Hetty’s management style is horrible, constantly threatening to quit, when the team risks their very lives and sacrifices so much for the very same job is shameful. that and the secrecy will eventually break all trust.

She can’t set up this whole thing and then just say…well you all didn’t listen, it’s not my fault…
I know it is not over yet…we shall see.
…but she typically is pathetic about taking ownership of the results of her actions. she make these small comments like it is her fault, momentarily expresses rather insincere remorse, and then go on as if nothing has happened…nothing changes, ever…
As i do not believe the whole mole thing is over, I still hold out hope that se will actually pay a price personally for all her meddling.

  29. In regard to Deeks being so over the line…
Yep, I get it, but I think Sam is just as bad.
Because of his size and military background, we seem to tolerate more from him.
In Spiral, after he watched Callen get poisoned, he chased the girl onto the roof.
After shooting her,…he shot and killed the helicopter pilot, who had just landed, in cold blood. For no reason at all. The guy didn’t even look at Sam, he didn’t have a gun, Sam never identified himself as law enforcement or told the guy to freeze, get out or shut it down…just killed the poor dude. The suitcases were on the ground still. He intentionally shot an unarmed man that was not posing a threat to himself or anyone else at the time.
Then, we have Sam, incredibly unprofessionally taunting and beating the hell out of the fake seal in Sealhunter. It was certainly not necessary to subdue the guy. He even put down the weapon so he could pound on him, right.
Then again, he did the EXACT same thing to Kaled is the school, and likely would have killed him if his kid wasn’t there.
It is a pretty long list if you actually look at it.
So…now we are going to pick on Deeks?..cut the guy some slack please.

    • I don’t think Deeks has a problem; he as many of us have our moments, yes, but he is in control and he does open up about it; that’s how to deal with trauma. In “Impact” Season 5 Nate is sent to talk with Sam & Deeks; he tells Hetty (about Sam) “He’s as stubborn as he is big….trauma and damage is cumulative and if it happens too many times he’ll reach a breaking point.” As you (Ed) pointed out Sam in my opinion will be the one who cracks; Sam has already shown some of that (thanks Ed for listing some of those actions).

      Like

    • Was not meaning to pick on Deeks when I noted he’s already cross the line. I don’t pay as much attention to the specifics of what the other characters do, to be honest, so I didn’t pick up on Sam killing that pilot (plus I’ve probably only seen that ep. once). So thanks for pointing out some of Sam’s over-the-line behavior as well. I probably would have been more accurate to state that all of our dear OSP members have probably stepped over the line in one way, shape or form if we really think about it (depending on one’s definition, of course).

      Like

      • I only started paying more attention to the specifics of the others when the double standard became more of a plot issue.
The whole double standard has been glaringly obvious for some time. But, now that Deek’s actions, that are in line with others on the team, are being used to question his character it irritates me to no end.

We hear things like ….”Sam is the most honorable man I know”
yet he has murdered people and beaten men well beyond any possible need, just to satisfy his rage…
Not quite sure what everybody’s definition of honor is… but that might not quite be it…
Now Deeks is questioned for the very same things…
        interesting.

Was this filmed during a light week for COD? It felt like he and Anna only (thankfully) had a few scenes. But how excited was I just at the “Previously on NCIS:LA” shot of Deeks’ confession? I’m thrilled that Whiting is alive, since it at least means more of a Deeks-centric storyline in our future. I have no expectations though that Hetty will pay for unleashing her on Deeks.

What I really liked about this episode was it was the first time we got some typical Kensi-Deeks partners-at-work scenes, which we’ve been missing for basically the whole season. I loved your assessment of them as vintage scenes but where they’ve learned how to say what they mean. Deeks’ expression when Kensi leaned in to kiss him in the van was priceless.

Plus, how is it that no one has mentioned wetsuit-wearing Deeks? You all know he’s my favorite!

  44. I think I might be getting ready to see just a good old fashioned, case driven episode.
Leave Kensi and Deeks on solid ground, get some of the nice banter and a couple of sweet looks or gestures mixed in. No big movement but no drama either in the relationship.
Leave Callen’s relationship with Anna alone, and out of sight, don’t put Sam’s family in trouble…and so on.
Let the dust settle, let the team get along together, and have them work as a group to solve the crime. How about if the drama and threats come from the actual case instead of all these outside stories….
Not for long, just a week or two.
I really like when the cases have a personal component, it makes it interesting, no doubt. And, I am looking to clean up some of the remaining loose ends and see some Densi progress as well…plus find and have a chat with Sabatino…
But, I think that maybe I am getting a little saturated with all the interconnected drama. I’m not sure. It just feels like we need a couple of light, funny easy weeks or at least case focused, to get back in the groove…to catch our breath.
Plus, the reprieve will take the strain off my blood pressure medication…
I am already tripling up on the dosage…that’s okay, right?…I don’t think the doctor will mind,

hope that Deeks gets at least one dance with the love of his life…
instead of just looking on from the cheap seats, in the worst undercover character available, as he always does…
while somebody else gets to hold Kensi…
he doesn’t really get a fair deal from Hetty or the writers…

I would love to see them dance together…for real…not the stomp on your feet waltz thing…
The poor guy deserves it, doesn’t he…

by the way…Dani looks amazing !!!

Ed, totally agree, I was hoping we would get Deeks playing the maracas while she danced, somehow that seemed like it would be romantic!!

      • exactly…
it is a pattern that I would not mind seeing change.
besides, Hetty owes him for ratting him out to Whiting…
Callen gets the smoochy undercover at the Russian Consulate and get to hang with Kensi in Rage…(another YUCK episode, by the way..)
Shouldn’t Deeks get a nice chance to smooch on his ladybird for the good of the op???
Purely to maintain their cover, of course…

  46. guys, do the fandom a favor and focus on your favs only, other than hating on other characters and actors. you guys say you don’t care about some characters but you spend a lot of time talking about them when you should be directing your attention and strenght to the ones you like. it saddens me to see fans dragging other characters down and wishing they’d have less screen time ( meaning: no screen time and transfering it to densi ) just because they don’t fit their likes. I like densi and their scenes are lovely but they’re not what the shows revolves around, so they can’t and won’t have all the screen time of the show.
I’m not a non-neric fan. I love them but I find it interesting that you guys are not affected with eric and nell as a couple now and saying they “steal” the densi screentime. So why do you say that of other characters?
think a little and please enjoy the show and all its characters. And if you don’t like some characters, stop hating on them and focus on your favs.
