How do you balance comedy and drama?

I totally understand what ECO says about using comedy to diffuse tense situations. As a former Emergency Room nurse, I can certainly vouch that this occurs very often, and usually smack in the middle of the most dramatic of times. When you are dealing with gang fights, shootings, stabbings, overdoses, and other life and death situations on a daily basis, you will often hear someone joking or cracking wise. To a bystander it would probably seem totally inappropriate, maybe even cruel. But I call it a form of self preservation. While irreverent, it is never, ever disrespectful. There is a fine line between irreverence and disrespect, and it is never crossed. But humor is a way to vent, blow off some steam, to shake off some of the horror that comes in our line of work. I am sure it is the same with police, firefighters, and military personnel, etc. If you didn’t laugh, one could quickly go mad.
I appreciate that ECO, the NCIS-LA cast, writers and producers recognize this, and take such a careful, thoughtful, and sensitive approach to combining drama and comedy. For me, it is what sets this show apart from all of the other procedurals. This show has a heart and it shows.
Speaking of heart, now on to the wedding. I am so excited!

Thanks Eric and WikiDeeks staff for another great video! I enjoyed it so much since I have often wondered myself how it is possible in some scenes for the actors/actresses to balance comedy and drama. I think Eric is a master at it and this is also one of the many reasons I fell in love with Deeks and his extraordinary way to use humor to defuse tension.
My question this week is about the long-awaited wedding episode:
#askECO Despite the many bumps in the road Deeks and Kensi had to face for nine years, can you remember the precise moment in which you realized these two characters were not only meant to be together but would also get married for real one day?

Hi all I’m new to the series and can honestly say I have never gone through so many emotions in anyone series except NCIS LA. I would like to ask Eric Do you base your character on anyone in particular you have met in your life or have you taken parts of yourself and incorporated them into the character Marty Deeks x PS Am binge watching in the UK x love to you all stay safe x
