Review: NCISLA “Indentured” (S13E03)

This week’s episode of NCIS: Los Angeles, “Indentured,” saw the return of Frank Military to the writer’s chair. He paired up with director Eric Pot to deliver the strongest episode of the season, a standalone story with a couple good twists that contained no Russians or talk of babies, just the standard dose of darkness we’ve come to expect (and enjoy) from Mr. Military.

Earning Trust

The episode began with a gripping, well-shot cold open shoot-out. It’s always immediately involving when the cold open involves our team and not just a stranger. This scene in particular reminded me of the fantastic shoot-out at the start of “A Line in the Sand.” In this case, Callen and Sam appeared to know ATF Agent Francisco Reyes, and their worry as they raced to help him conveyed a sense of urgency to the scene that had me rooting hard for them to get there before it was too late. Afterwards, it also had me rooting hard for them to get the bad guys responsible.

The episode centered around conflict between Sam and Callen and Kilbride as they tried to bring the killers to justice and secure the illegal firearms. It ended with a meeting of the minds over a single malt. Trust does have to be earned. It’s also one of the show’s continuing themes, right along with problematic parents. However, the divide between Kilbride and Sam in this episode felt a little forced. I’m not sure it’s legal in California to privately buy or sell weapons at all, and it sure didn’t seem like the general was filling out any required paperwork, making his purported innocence all the shakier and Kilbride’s reticence to go after him all the more out of character. We don’t need tension within the team in order to enjoy a dramatic story.

I did enjoy the twist of having Kilbride one step ahead of his “partner” on the case, proving to Sam, Callen and us that he was on the right side all along. Here’s hoping their working relationship continues to grow. It would be great to see them all working together to support the team and especially, to protect and encourage growth in the newbies.

Operating Undercover

Before Season 13 began, I wrote a list of the top 10 things I wished for this season. Item #6 included more undercover assignments. This is a team famous for their undercover skills, yet over time they seem to be going under less frequently and for maybe only a single scene here and there. It’s a great way to see the team tested, to watch them improvise under pressure, and to see them play off of one another. All this to say that I really enjoyed Kensi (and Fatima’s) assignment to Tranquility Villa.

Let me pause here to express some dismay at the re-use of the same rehab facility (in name at least- the logo and exact location seemed to have changed) that the team penetrated back in Season 5’s “Recovery.” It troubled me that they neither acknowledged it nor took a moment to think through whether it would be safe for Kensi to return there given her original cover as a dietician was blown at the end of the episode. I have to believe there was some additional content that had to be edited out- Kensi and Deeks definitely seemed to have had further conversations with Fatima about the assignment, given that they knew she’d be joining Kensi when they spoke in wardrobe.

We did get an oblique reference to Densi’s original assignment when Deeks joked about the pool boy having a sex addiction, but it felt like a missed opportunity for them to reflect back on where they were in their relationship at that time, and what happened the very night that original operation ended. Again, maybe we just missed out on some deleted material.

The conversation in wardrobe where Deeks spun out his wacky possible backstory for Kensi’s character was charming. It actually addressed another item on my top 10 list, #6- more Densi variety, as in, show us more than the serious, struggling Densi we had so much of last season. Here, we got a few moments of them enjoying one another’s company and being silly together, and it was refreshing to see.

It was also fun to watch a grungy, serious Kensi playing an addict. Her demeanor shifted considerably, and I would have absolutely believed she belonged in rehab. Fatima, on the other hand, didn’t really feel like she was projecting a different character, other than being so physically aggressive. She’s been somewhat whiny and insensitive around the team, so the cover didn’t feel like a big leap for her. Maybe Fatima has this kind of work dialed in because she used to be an actress, but it would have been interesting to see her ask Kensi for advice on how to approach it, or maybe express curiosity about how Kensi had managed to summon such deep emotions when convincing Mia she would kill her abusive boyfriend.

I was glad that Fatima (and Rountree) were there largely to set up and support the main four to carry the story forward. And that story took a very dark turn. The actress who played Mia, Lex King, was great. Her height made her initially appear somewhat intimidating, but she showed so much vulnerability that I really came to care about what happened to her.

I did have to chuckle in the scene where Kensi expressed her willingness to shoot Mia’s boyfriend. Last week she was reassuring people in the gym that at least they could shoot a man from a distance, and here she’s feigning (?) enthusiasm about being a gun for hire. It was all very much in character.

The other source of amusement was Deeks showing up as “Max.” While I appreciate the callback to Deeks’ alter ego, this again felt like a bit of a missed opportunity. They could have had him throw on a grungy jacket and try to be a bit more intimidating, or he could have expressed dismay at the use of his least favorite undercover role. I think I might have enjoyed an extended cut of this episode, where we could have had a bit more time to spend on backstory callbacks.

The intensity of emotions Kensi summoned when she shared her characters’ backstory about being raped and then murdering her own abusive boyfriend surprised me. It was truly impressive that she could pull up so much emotion and be so convincing in that role. It made me wonder exactly where those emotions were coming from. We can’t answer that question, but my guess is that she was imagining Kessler’s stated plans for her, what it might be like if he succeeded, and how relieved she’ll feel when he is eventually killed, hopefully by her own hand. He had been the subject of conversation just that morning, making him unfortunately fresh in her mind (although something tells me he’s never too far from her thoughts).

Confronting (and Embracing?) the Darkness

So yes, the subject of Kessler returned at the episode’s start when Deeks told Kensi that the man’s girlfriend had been found dead in Florida. Not the happiest way to start off a morning, but as Kensi said, at least they had found out something about Kessler and not the other way around. She could be predator, not prey- a “little predator, little cute, cuddly velociraptor,” as Deeks playfully described. Military is better than most at introducing personal information into the middle of a case without it feeling forced (see “The Seventh Child,” so for me, the Kessler talk worked well.

Still, serious Densi was definitely present, and how could they not be given the subject of Kessler being raised? A deadly serious Protective Deeks was on full display, telling Kensi that he’d kill Kessler if he had the chance, that, “He’s not gettin’ a second chance. Not with you.” This Protective Deeks is quite appealing, although he does run the risk of trampling over Kensi’s determination to protect herself.

It has the potential to be an interesting dynamic, an intriguing source of conflict, between them. For Kessler seems to be triggering all of Deeks’ instincts to protect women in danger. His drive to do so is maybe the most fundamental source of motivation for his life choices. He’s always managed to toe a fine line with Kensi though, absolutely respecting her ability to take care of herself, actually finding that quality appealing, and being in awe of her strength. Yet how can he not want to do everything in his power to protect her – the one person in the world he can’t live without – from this horrible man who promised to do horrible things to her?

Deeks killed Boyle to protect a woman. We still don’t know the exact circumstances around that act. It doesn’t seem like it would take much to get him to cross the line with Kessler if he had the chance. It sure would be a great way to explore his character. Who knows, maybe they could even work in the Boyle details and turn it into a “Deeks, M” episode. (I know, I know, but I can dream, right?)

Military gave us a second plot twist when we learned that Mia had taken matters into her own hands, killing Meyer herself rather than allowing Kensi’s undercover character to do it for her. When the news was confirmed, Kensi was lying awake in bed, presumably worrying about Mia. Upon knowing Mia would be safe, Kensi seemed quite comfortable knowing that she “…Gave her the courage to do it.”

I enjoyed the twist, although I wasn’t sure how comfortable I felt about the darkness of Mia’s act, and Kensi’s (and Deeks’) willingness to let it go. Obviously Meyer deserved to die- we watched him and his men gun down a team ATF agents, and he was hatefully abusive, after all. Yet whenever the team takes the law into their own hands – in this case giving Mia a head start from said law – I have to admit to feeling just a little uncomfortable. And those shades of grey, I suppose, are what makes things interesting.

In this case Deeks gently tried to confirm what his ladybird wanted to do. Even here, he was still a voice of the law and of conscience, as he pointed out that Mia would be long gone by morning. In the end, though, he wasn’t about to contradict Kensi, and I don’t think he’d have wanted to (he did hide Tiffany away for years after Boyle), so his soft “OK” felt right.

Memorable Moments

  • Was it just me, or did Meyer, with his German accent, sound very Schwartzennegerish (Schwartzennegerian?) with his “Now, they’re orphans” catchphrase?
  • I haven’t had a chance to weigh in on the new opening credits. The music is, well, different, but I love the shot selctions they made, particularly including my favorite Deeks (Surfer Deeks) and the “Sans Voir” explosion.
  • Is Callen’s hair getting longer?
  • The music, particularly at the beginning of the episode, was quite effective. The strings as Callen and Sam stood over the fallen bodies of the ATF agents upped the scene’s poignancy , and the pulsing music in Ops as the team began their investigation kept up the sense of urgency.
  • Rountree was quite skilled with all the on-line research plus knowing how to shut down the system to avoid eavesdropping. (I didn’t know they ever had to worry about that in Ops.) I’m beginning to wonder if the showrunners all think that younger people are automatically computer geniuses. It might explain some of their age jokes (none this ep-yay!) and Rountree’s abilities.
  • Was Deeks leaving an apartment building to get in his truck? What happened to their house? Are they in hiding from Kessler? Or was Deeks just walking down the street?

The episode didn’t feature a ton from our favorite character, but we got some quality scenes and an absorbing story, so I’m very satisfied. We also had no mention of Russia- item #10 on my list! Unfortunately that streak ends at two episodes with the return of Katya next week. Come back then for a review from my wikiDeeks colleague Brenda along with Lyssa’s fabulous preview. And before then, check back in for new editions of Deeks’ Surf Log and Kensi’s Journal. For now, let us know what you thought of “Indentured.”

  1. Nice review! Now for the not so nice part, My thoughts:

Why was Better Angels so good? Because it was very emotional, packed a serious punch, and wasn’t stupid. Where has that quality of writing been in FM’s recent clunkers? And sadly, this is another clunker to add to that sad collection.

I didn’t care about all the Densi callbacks, I wish I did, but at this time, I don’t.

Keep up the one sided politics and see how fast you lose fans, idiot writers!

So, throughout the episode, Kilbride looks beyond suspicious. Yet at the end of the day, they’re in Hetty’s office, drinking her Scotch like everything is perfectly normal? There is all kinds of things wrong with that beyond insulting image!!

I’m just gonna say it: Hetty needs to be the one who tracks down Kessler. Because if he’s been on the run for this long, then the smartest and boldest person on the team needs to find him! (Course, this would require the writers having an actual brain…)

Gotta say, I’m actually really enjoying the whole ‘watching through live tweets’ thing. Should’ve started doing this last Season.

There is only 1 thing that was likable in this clunker: Callen asking about Hetty. Because him being concerned about her is a good sign that whenever this show ever decides to try and be good again, they won’t be in a stupid tiff.

Since it definitely looks like there won’t be a Hetty update in the next episode, gonna do the ‘Watch through live tweets’ thing again.

Linda deserves so much better then this.
Hetty deserves so much better then this.
Every Hetty fan deserves so much better then this.
We ALL deserve so much better then to watch this show’s incredible legacy be tarnished like this!!

    • Have to say, Better Angels had a GREAT performance by Dani, but the story was so illogical–a Syrian travels to LA to drop off a thumb drive–I didn’t care. This episode was the same. And I agree about the idea that drinking Scotch somehow makes Kilbride’s behavior toward the team okay.

  3. Thank you so much for another amazing review, Karen.

First I loved the Densi Scenes this week. Deeks is always the sensitive, the supportive, and the protective one in this relationship. The way he asked about her feelings and what she is thinking was spot on and at the core of the characters. Yes he worries about her, and And he always put her above him. yah, Normally he keeps his worries & thoughts to himself and just watches over her because she hates it when he fusses all over her, but he can’t help it. After all it’s in his nature to come to save the damsel in distress especially all women in his life. Also Kensi knows she doesn’t have the right to tell him not to worry, because after all it’s their life and what affects her will eventually get him too.

The way he didn’t look Kensi in the eyes when she confronted him in the dressing room gave me the vibes that he is up to something and he is taking matters into his hands. (Which in IMHP wouldn’t mind seeing it for a change) and maybe he is tracking Kessler down.

I have to agree with you Karen about Kensi’s emotions while she was speaking about her rape experience (DR was really good) and to be honest I had the same thought about Kessler and she was Thinking about his threats, but then I thought about her background and her life in the streets, maybe it was something she had to endure at that time & that’s why she refused to tell Deeks about it so he wouldn’t see her as a Victim (Over-Thinking Much)

Deeks proves once again how he is committed to his craft when he goes undercover he needs to create the character from scratch. The way he tells the story of the pool boy & the housewife was amusing and Was it just for undercover purposes only?? Or wasn’t some kind of role playing?? (Winky Face).
By the way “THAT IS NOT MAX” at least not the one we loved to hate or hate to love in earlier seasons.

I loved loved that Sam trusted Deeks and he was the one who told him about what they discovered and thought I’d see some progress in their relations, but then he Had the same conversation with Roundtree made my hopes crash all over again.

Also, I felt like there is something wrong with Kilbride and his character this season I don’t know if it’s what the writers want, or if it’s the character itself, but it didn’t sit well with me and made me more suspicious of Kilbride motives than trust him, Maybe it turns out to be he is the mole they were trying to catch last year (Crazy Theory).

I think FM did a good job of utilizing all the characters for the investigation, while also making time for an emotionally complex b-plot. Mixing it all together makes for a solid episode. No, loose ends. No weirdly out-of-place humor. Just a good episode

    • Sam should trust Deeks after all Deeks has done for him, his family, and the team. It should be a given, not a shock. It brought me back to last season when Sam threatened to come over and rip Deeks’ ear wiggs out if he didn’t leave the premises after finding out Kessler was after Kensi. But now Deeks is good enough? When he needs a “favor”? Did not sit well with me….🤨

  4. Just a quick remark for now: Deeks and Kensi did not touch each other the entire episode. 🤷‍♀️ We got teaser pics of the ending scene and, as with last year’s promos, that was all it was. I caught season 8, episode 19 Densi’s intimate scene for comparison, and I am just baffled by these developments. Kensi just closed her eyes and that was it. Fade out, scene ended, show done. Deeks did not scoop her up, wrap his arms around her, no goodnight kiss, stroke on the hair, nothing. I’m just flabbergasted by this.

Another interesting tidbit: The comments on Facebook have been absolutely brutal, however, all of a sudden comments are popping up from people saying how great the episodes were and how much they love Fatima and Rountree; something did not add up. Turns out the positive comments are from accounts that have not been in use, in some cases for years…..hmmm

More to follow…..but not much….what can you say at this point…..sigh…

      • Thank you for your review, Karen. You have the gift of very tactfully saying the same things that many people, myself included, simply blur out.

I felt the team was all over the place in this episode. I am going to leave the story line out of it because I felt, again, it was too many degrees removed from it being an actual Naval Investigation. I could barely keep track of who was where with whom and doing exactly what. It felt like a disjointed effort as opposed to the team work we used to see.

Who is actually leading the team these days? Kilbride with his endless yelling has worn me out. He is new to the team and I find him to be disrespectful to the people who have put their lives on the line going on 13 years. During the OPS scene, Kensi suggested she’d go under cover and the rest of the team figured out a plan for themselves. Where was Kilbride? This would never happen on Hetty’s watch. Or Rogers. Or even Moseley.

The convo between Callen and Sam, to me, only brought home the uselessness of Fatima. That could have been between Sam and Callen. She literally brought nothing to the table. I also did not understand the need for her to be undercover with Kensi. Why? (I wish Kensi would have knocked her off the show during the “fight”, lol!)

I remarked that Linda Hunt did not look well in episode 1. To me, she looked pale, tired, and very frail. Eileen stated that change is good. Not always, but sometimes change is necessary. I understand Linda wanting to slow down; however, as with Nell and Eric, this could have been written in a way without completely assassinating their characters.

I agree with Karen in that there were a lot of missed opportunities in this episode. And I was also not comfortable with Kensi’s decision to “wait until morning to trace the phone”. Kensi is by the book. She had known Mia for a day and a half.

I find it interesting that FM used to write Densi so differently. When he writes an episode, it is usually full of Densi scenes, as was this one, but why is all intimacy completely gone now? When he wrote himself in as Kessler, he talks about wanting to have sex with Kensi. It just feels off to me.

I find that the Densi scenes are becoming a source of frustration. In this episode, they called for Deeks holding and comforting Kensi quite a few times, yet they never actually even touched during the entire episode. Compare this ending bed scene to the Season 8, episode 19 opening bed scene. As I stated before, I am baffled and frustrated by this development, which appeared to have started since the wedding, and escalated to what seems to be a platonic relationship now.

This brings me to Kensi’s fake rape story and DR’s acting of same. I have always said that both DR and ECO are capable of handling heavy material as actors. It’s just that the material has not been there since, for instance, To Live and Die in Mexico. I am comparing DR to Tracy S. and Marina S. of Chicago PD, and the latter are given very heavy material, which DR is equally capable of but simply not given; her talent has been wasted these past few years. Same goes for ECO (and I also agree that he needs to clean up a bit more, the days of the California beach boy have long passed).

My final point: I found Kensi’s fake rape story extremely disturbing and offensive. As a survivor myself, it is territory you just do not touch unless it specifically pertains to the investigation, such as is the case in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. There could have been many reasons for Kensi to be in a rehab facility as an addict; oxy after a car accident, surgery gone wrong, competing in sports, the list is endless. You never go with a fake rape story. It was a huge trigger for me. It is hard enough for a rape victim to be believed. To create a fake rape back story is a huge insult to a crippling life-time injury victims live with every day. It was wrong on all levels.

        Thanks for listening everyone.

  5. Sleeper accounts are a thing. Consider them Callen’s distant, unknown relatives from one branch of his timeline or another…maybe they’re Russians, maybe Romani, maybe some other bunch we know nothing about (yet).

As for the newbies…forget about Deeks for a moment. Remember the amount of grief they gave Dom? Or even Nell? Nate even came in for his share of harassment. But the golden children? Not a thing. Contrast this with Chicago Fire (for example)…new characters always get to deal with some ribbing and the like. It helps us both relate to them (who hasn’t been new on a job?) and get to know them, since the ribbing always brings out some kind of background or strength. And one of the established characters usually takes the newcomer under his or her wing, so you get that additional bonding and character-building.

    • I had no idea about the sleeper accounts! The same ones are popping up with positive comments on every Facebook post now, especially when the posts are about Rountree or Fatima. It’s becoming a pattern. That’s a pretty desperate and shamefully deceitful move. Not to mention an insult to the intelligence of the actual viewers. 🤦‍♀️

Thanks for the review, Karen. I enjoyed the review and the episode. I enjoyed the Densi scenes and always like Densi call backs, but that’s probably why I enjoy Wikideeks the ultimate source for all things Marty Deeks. Although this isn’t WikiHetty I want to take this one time to comment about the lack of Hetty in the show. I personally don’t think anyone is telling Linda Hunt what to do. I believe TPTB want her to remain in the show and are willing to grant her requests. Last year they even filmed her in her driveway to make that happen. Linda is 76 years old and most likely does not want to work every day or even every week. (I’m sure when she signed up for this she didn’t picture it going 13 years.) There’s also still a pandemic so she still has to be careful. You’ll notice her scenes are always only with one other person. I would think when she negotiated her contract she named the number of episodes she was willing to do and the amount she wanted for doing them. (When Eric wrote Mother he said he had to send the script to Linda to see if she was willing to do it so it seems that she calls the shots.) I’m sure she wants to spend more time with her partner and maybe do some of the things they couldn’t do previously due to injuries and shut downs. I like to think she’s enjoying the best of both worlds being semi-retired, still getting to practice her craft with coworkers she enjoys working with, and keeping her fans happy. I think we should respect her choices. Shows come and go. Characters come and go. That’s just how it is. Every year we get all the predictions that this will be the last year for NCIS LA. I guess if you say it every year you’ll eventually be right and can pat yourself on the back.

  9. I think we are over analyzing a fictional story composed by great script writer. At face value the it worked very well . Would we like to see more bantering, more Deeks and Kensi moments, the fabulous four together again? Absolutely! It is so very difficult for me to critique an episode in such detail as I would be unaware of what was cut from the editing. Furthermore, let’s face it, we are so tuned in to all of the details of the all of the seasons that we forget that Mr Military is one of many many writers for NCIS LA . Some just do their homework better than others. Over the years there have been many inconsistencies in the story lines but I watch to be entertained primarily for the characters’ interpersonal relationships and secondary for the plot. Such deep analysis gives a better insight into the epiosde but for me it is just a dissection of a very well written script by an extremely talented man. I see the value in change!

Excellent review as usual, Karen. A few random thoughts….
I agree with Jessie on a couple of things. I watched that scene with Deeks and Kensi discussing Kessler several times, and I also thought that when Deeks didn’t look Kensi in the eye at one point, that the wheels in his mind were spinning and he was planning his own search for Kessler on the side, without Kensi’s approval or knowledge. I also believed that Kensi dredged up thoughts of Kessler for talking of being raped, but it could be an intriguing story if something happened like this when she was on the streets….maybe not to herself but she witnessed it and brought up that memory in rehab to sell her cover. We don’t know too much what happened to Kensi on the streets when she was a teenager, but having a retro story or flashback about this could be quite interesting.
Last season when Kensi was under so much stress, Deeks gently suggested that she talk to someone about all the pressure she was under. My first thought was Nate, as it was mentioned in an article a while back that he might make an appearance. But in helping Mia – I remember when Kensi talked about shooting Mia’s boyfriend that years ago she said she thought at one time she’d be a bounty hunter – and talking in rehab, no matter how much was real or contrived – seemed to be cathartic for Kensi.
Was anyone else surprised that Kessler’s girlfriend would show up dead this soon? Despite her and Kessler’s toxic relationship, I imagined that she was helping out Kessler by watching Kensi and Deek’s movements and gathering intel for him. And since Boucher (the girlfriend) told them last season that Kessler was barely literate, I figured it was she and not Kessler that sent that postcard to Kensi. So Kessler’s killing of Boucher a few months back IMO indicates that Kessler is getting ready to strike, as he either did not need her help anymore or that Kessler considered her a hindrance by then. Whatever the reason Kessler killed his girlfriend, as you said Karen, it’s put Protective Deeks in full display.
Showrunner Gemmill has mentioned in an article that there will become a rift between Callen and the rest of the team. The seeds probably were sown in the premiere with Sam’s warning of Callen about the new info of him being Subject 17. Since last season IMO Kilbride has shown that he respects Sam the most on the team because of his military service, and in this last episode Kilbride clearly wanted Sam on the case for that reason instead of Callen. Despite working out the distrust issues with Kilbride and that mutual drink of scotch at the end, I wonder if the rift is starting to open, especially if Kilbride clearly continues to favor Sam over Callen in the upcoming episodes.
Like the premiere, this was a transitional episode in setting up storylines for later in the season. I’m in agreement with Karen that I hope the Russia – Katya storyline is concluded, hopefully before midseason – please. If the next few episodes are top heavy with this story arc, as long as it ends, I can live with that. Better sooner than later.

I know no one will agree with me on this, but if all the writers want for Hetty is to always have her be somewhere else and never go deep into why she’s really doing it, then maybe its time for this show to end. Before Season 10, this show had something special. Hetty is the big spark that gives this show life, and without her, this show is a huge mess, and it’s been showing since Season 10.

I know everyone on here will say that Densi is a big part of this show, but they didn’t start until Season 2, and they’ve been stuck in this never ending obsession with having kids for 2 years now. and it’s showing no signs of going anywhere. Is that really fair?

If all the writers seem to want to do is have the team have temporally bosses that do nothing but disrespect them, don’t really do anything together, not have Hetty be a real part of her family that we know she loves deeply, then. What’s really the point here if nothing is really going to be explained?

Hetty is the real heart of this show, and what’s happening to her, is terrible. #SheDeservesBetter

      • I agree with you, Maria, in that Hetty’s character deserves so much better. I think IRL Linda is ready for retirement. Combined with the tough recovery from her car accident and Covid, I think she was ready last year, but probably was still under contract.

The fact that she wants to retire has nothing to do with how the writers and showrunners are handling this, as they did with Nell and Eric. This could and should have been turned into an attribute to her character rather than a charade.

I understand how you feel because I think they are doing the exact same thing to Densi.

    • First off I’m so sorry this happened to you M. It’s not always easy to know what to say when someone tells you they’ve been sexually assaulted, this shouldn’t have happened to you or anyone. Nobody deserves to be sexually assaulted, raped, or, abused no matter what period. I have no idea what to say so I’m sorry that the ep intrigued such an awful memory.

Second I don’t believe their initial thought about the rape story to be offensive or disturbing to the viewers they just used it to create some common ground between Kensi &Mia (abusive relations) to bond over.

Kilbride & Sam’s dispute was a little bit confusing especially that the TPTB always insisted to show that Sam will defend & support any SEAL or Navy member and he will not accept that anyone from them could cross the line no matter what. as if he can’t misjudge the character.

How can Sam treat Deeks & Roundtree equally!! Deeks worked hard and shed blood and tears to earn his trust. But what has Roundtree done to be trustworthy, other than raising his eyebrows and being amazed by every move or piece of information that comes through his way?
By the way, he also didn’t have a military background or training, and his hair doesn’t come across as a professional. (Sorry Roundtree Fans)

My last point here and please please don’t hate me after this. I just want to ask out of curiosity and see what you are all thinking about Fatima’s hijab. I know that the writers want to show us the diversity of characters but why do they have made her wear it if she would take it off when she goes on an assignment or in an undercover operation. Why don’t they just make her a Muslim like Sam but without the scarf wouldn’t that be more realistic and believable especially in her work field. I swear I’m not a racist or hater, and I respect all religions and cultural differences, I swear I even have a lovely devoted Muslim neighbor who by the way wearing a hijab and she’s a wonderful human being . All I ask is why did they make her wear it to take it off later? especially I remember her mother wasn’t wearing it in S11,plus she used to be an actress, So I admit my ignorance on the subject so if anyone could shed some lights on the subject, I’d be grateful.

Sorry if I offended anyone & please my apology in advance

      • Hi Jessie, I can’t comment on ‘Indentured’, didn’t see any of it. I only just started watching Season 12 yay! I might be wrong, happens a lot, but didn’t we learn that a friend of Fatima died which made Fatima reassess her life. As far a I remember she grew up ‘not devout’ and discovered religion and joined NCIS as a result of this life change. We’ve heard that she’s had issues with her parents, I’ve assumed it’s because she is now a devout Muslim and they are not. I always wondered what it would take for her to remove her hijab, now I know. A lot of assumptions there so I hope I’ve got it about right and not just confused things.

        • On reflection maybe the simplest answer is best. We all follow our faith in our own way. On the show I had the feeling that they had Fatima wear the hijab as some sort of statement but when it was inconvenient they had her take it off. One of the issues with working undercover is that you have to become someone you’re not and do things you wouldn’t normally do. If you sign up to do that sort of work I guess you have to do things against your beliefs. Not sure how that works.

I know about her friend’s death but I remember her mother was not devoted and there was no problem with her parents what I wanted to understand is if she is an undercover agent like the rest of the team then she will go on assignments so she doesn’t need to wear it as every job has it’s a necessity & requirements unless she is on desk duty and needed in OPS all the time to replace Eric and Nell then that would be acceptable

            • So I read this comment long ago, and today on rewatching this episode I did notice something which may explain this one. While never explicitly stated in the show, the rehab program the three were in seemed to be all women. From the patients to the staff, all of them. If this was standard across the board for the rehab facility, Fatima could go in without her hijab without the worry of a male presence.

              Like

      • Thank you so much for your kind words, Jessie. You’re the only one who offered any to me and that really means a lot.

All I was saying was that there were many other ways to create common ground between Mia and Kensi. Such as domestic violence, the same background Mia had to begin with. You never go with a fake rape.

I agree with the way the newbies are being treated (Robbie called them “The Golden Children”, excellent point). They have not done anything to earn anything from anybody. I remember in the armory when Fatima snapped at Kensi. Kensi should have floored her right there and then.

Sam took Deeks into the armory because he needed a favor. Do a stake-out. Excuse me, he is a 12-year veteran. Ask one of the newbies to go sit in a truck and take pictures. There was no reason at all for Fatima to be undercover with Kensi (in the same rehab she pretended to be a nutritionist a few years ago!). She brought absolutely nothing to that “operation”. But, of course, Deeks, being who he is, obliged. Whereas Sam threatened to rip his ear wiggs out when he wanted to go with Kensi to see Kessler. SMH.

DR guest-hosted Entertainment Tonight again; she’s thinking about what to do when this show ends. She interviewed ECO while her husband, his brother, was standing right next to them (functioning as ECO’s stunt double). Both ECO and DR have always prided themselves on keeping family life separate from their acting career, but the last 2 (3?) seasons especially, they have not been pulling it off. And tbh, it is a bit weird (creepy?) to shoot a love scene (or any scene) with your TV husband while your RL husband is standing right there…..

I actually posted a comment about the hijab. This was it: “I want to point out one thing about Fatima and I wonder if anybody has noticed? Why is her Hijab never on the same way? One scene it is around her chin, the next it is around her head, the next it is around her neck and shoulders. Also, if she is a devout Muslim, she can never take it off, however, on an upcoming episode she is going undercover with Kensi without her Hijab (from BTS scenes). This would never be allowed in the Muslim community”.

I don’t think I offended anyone. I don’t feel offended by your questions. Actually, a lot of people on social media are asking the same question.

Thank you again for your kind words, Jessie!

        • Oh M It was the least I could do. Believe me, I wish I could be of more help to you & I really appreciate your courage for confiding in us and sharing your story and if it’s any indication about your personality it will show you are fierce, impenetrable, and determined. You have my unconditional support.

You are absolutely right “M” about the story track, they could go in a different direction but they choose to go with the most dreadful one. But we have to remember who wrote the ep as it’s not the first time FM mentioned sexual assaults, (the Kessler talk to Kensi, crimeleon & an unlocked mind when Kensi she got assaulted) so it’s like a pattern to him and as you said this subject is not a jock and should be treated delicately.

About the newbies, I’m holding a grudge, because whenever you have a minor recurring character getting more focus, respect, &character development than the main characters (Deeks Kensi), that’s a problem. but I have to say In the last few seasons the writing is all over the place, and it sometimes feels these are not the characters we knew.

As for Fatima I was only wondering If she is an undercover agent like the rest of the team then she will go on assignments so she doesn’t need to wear hijab as every job has it’s a necessity unless she is on desk duty and needed in OPS all the time to replace Eric and Nell then that would be acceptable or maybe it’s just me trying to figure out any way to stack them in OPS. Just to clarify (She’s as an actress a beautiful lady, delivers her lines as written, they just came off flat, but there’s no personality there and the fight scene was so eerie.)

The Densi scenes were great. The Kensi angst, the Deeks desire to console and support his wife but I’ve to agree with you M . I mean they don’t have to turn the show into a romantic soap but they could just use the same amount of their screen time to discuss other topics but also related to them and give us more insight of their life. As you said Densi started to sound more like an old married couple than two people planning their future together. They are supposed to be newly married for 2 years only and they stress each other with the pregnancy. I love how sensitive Deeks can be. Not only funny but surprisingly insightful when needed he has been amazingly supportive throughout the efforts to start a family and Kensi’s being stalked by Kessler.
I also so wanted to hear Kensi express some change in her overall outlook on what her future should hold. Finger crossed.

          • I’m beginning to understand why Fatima is not the most popular character. Not sure the hijab belongs with skin tight jeans, I thought it was all about modesty. Is she still wearing them? I don’t think alcohol is approved of by Muslims yet Sam is proud to be a sommelier. I’ve got a lot to learn. Not judging, just interested.

            Like

          • I have noticed that patterns with FM too. It is always about Kensi being assault in some way or form. Disturbing.

Don’t get me started on the newbies. They bring nothing to the show. All they do is take screen time away from the OG actors. I do not find Rountree likeable and Fatima is just a terrible actress. They do not connect with the team nor the audience. A revolving comment I keep repeating.

I do love any Densi scenes, but they are now a source of frustrating seeing how they never ever touch. They used to have this undeniable and palpable chemistry and passion, which has completely disappeared.

So many opportunities in this episode for Deeks to scoop Kensi up and hold her close, but it never happens. In that one scene where she has her doubts about Mia and Deeks states “yeah, but you gave her that chance”, clearly a very heavy emotional moment, but he just lets her stand there and walks away. Same with the ending scene in bed. No holding her close and letting her fall asleep in his arms or – heaven forbid – a goodnight kiss.

Then again, when they allow your RL husband to be on set and right there, things are awkward to say the least, and I think ECO and DR have lost the capability of separating RL relationships and portraying a TV relationship.

BTW – In Season 5 Episode 9 Kensi and Deeks go undercover at Tranquility Villa (the same one in Season 13 Episode 3) and her original undercover was as a nutritionist.
It was Kensi who figured out who had taked control of the predator drone and helped the team stop the attack. Why are they now having her go back undercover in the same place, even if it is a different cover ID, she could be exposed by a current employee that had worked there previously.

Cast member from The Futon Critic: (Unsecured site)
Stephanie Erb. as Tranquility Villa Staff Member Psychologist Vicky Weber.

And since Deeks can’t go back to LAPD, he is now given non-critical assignments?
The whole undercover assignment by Kensi and Fatima was so unnecessary!

When will we have another episode as good as “The Silo” or “Better Angels”?
Need better stories (ARCs), writers, directors and producers! Give the cast something to show off their talent.

  13. I don’t know what’s happened to Frank Military, but his writing the last few seasons has been pretty bad. Nothing in this episode made sense, and Kilbride was really irritating. Both Kensi and Fatima were good undercover, but what was the point? They got nothing useful about Meyer. There was more time in the rehab with Mia than with Meyer or Collins, so I guess this episode wasn’t about illegal gun sales to militias. It didn’t make any sense.

  14. Mr. Military often shows the darker side of life in his writings but ,in the end, there is always a “ resurrection” of the human spirit as the characters would reunite with a deeper understanding of each other. The last scene in Sunday’s episode was indicative of this – Kensi, the phone call, the joint reaction thereafter. What seems to be missing in the last two seasons, and this one as well, is the personal connection the characters had with one another. Covid kept them at bay but there still could be the lighthearted bantering at a distance. Now and then that happened but not with all four of them present. This group, unlike the other CBS series, never had anyone leave the show because of discord, envy, ego, etc. They are a unique group of professionals who are rooted in family and friendships. To make this series survive – and that can still happen- the voices of the faithful fans needs to be heard. If the cast really wants to continue working together then maybe they need to speak up and get back to the basics of what made this series last so long. Again, the plot needs to be secondary to the characters. Watching the older episodes brings back memories of connections that are missing in the disjointed scenes of the present.
If the cast sincerely wants to get to – perhaps 15 years together? – then they need to speak up a because even the most loyal fans are losing interest in what the series has to offer. Please – no more social issues and crisis!

    • The characters need to drive the plot, not vice versa. It’s killing the show. I think the OG actors want off though. ECO has his Cloud Nine Productions, Linda wants to retire, LL has his music.
, DR wants to direct but will most likely become a spokesperson. The passion started dwindling in season 11, was gone in season 12, and I doubt is survivable after season 13.

      • LL, I think, might simply be getting bored with the role. If you compare him to Ice T over on SVU it’s not even close, and T has two music projects (at least) to keep him going, But Ice T also had a role in how his character was developed and portrayed, and I don’t honestly know if LL had the same level of input. In any case, Sam as a character has been stagnant for many years (Super-SEAL SamHannah only goes so far).

I have to agree with Christine, the show needs to go back to the main characters, Sam, callen, Deeks and kensi and build from there..this is one of the few shows out there that the main four are still on it..I really miss kensi and Deeks and their romantic banter and your right the bed scene could have ended with a hug, kiss anything romantic..it seems as soon as the wedding happened they for the most part stopped the banter, the hugs…Sam and Callen used to joke and banter and be best friends, ( the other married couple) and we don’t see that either, callen is still worried about how he was brought up, we have gone there already. He found his dad. Or he is worrying about Anna, Joelle and anything Russia..it’s getting old..I am used to hetty being gone, I miss her, but miss the bullpen interactions more..I also miss the old Nell and Eric not what they became the last few years. Love, love the show, need them to go back to basics.. I even miss all the things blowing up while saving Los Angeles..

  16. I am used to Hetty not being there. In the earlier episodes she was the voice of wisdom. She is now more of a reminder of how things used to be when she does make a cameo appearance. It is refreshing to see her but, at this point, not really necessary. Kilbride’s character needs to lighten up! He is getting way too nasty! A smile and bantering now and then would warm things up with the team. Granger had the right balance – not initially- but he did eventually come around to chuckle with the team. I was thinking why they don’t use the red headed Dave Flynn from San Diego to be up in ops. He was friendly and hit it off with the team. Also there was the black haired gal from the same location. She was not initially an agent but became one and was really on the ball in ops with Eric when Nell went back home. Roundtree has grown on me. He is now the runner for the older guys – Sam and Callen – as it is obvious they don’t move as fast as they did 13 years ago! He has a great genuine smile and including him in the bantering in the bullpen would work. Fatima is more serious and belongs in ops for sure but, like Nell, she can be called upon when needed elsewhere. If only someone would read these insights and act on them the series would flourish. I am thinking that all of them want it to end or they would catch on with the input. Their characters have become way too serious from the ones we loved. I believe we can all grow old gracefully but – does our lack of humor and fun have to go out the window with age? Please bring back the romance and humor that made this a great series and forget about focusing so much on the plot lines.

Christine, your mentioning Scott Grimes (David Flynn) and /or Allysa Diaz (Jasmine Garcia) as candidates to be up in Ops would be great IMO, but I doubt the show could get either one of them. Scott Grimes is a main character in the syfy spoof “The Orville” but they’re filming their supposedly last season so there is a remote chance he could be available soon but I frankly doubt it. Allysa Diaz is a main character on ABC’s “The Rookie” and has a rather meaty part over there (LAPD detective, married to a lawyer, has a newborn son), so I doubt she’s available also.

      • TBH, I doubt the show is going to bring in any new major characters. Especially considering how people have been begging to get Fatima and Rountree off, but renewed their contracts anyway. Top that off with the fact that the OGs are getting less screen time and are off focusing on other projects. They don’t want to do it anymore. My guess is Season 13 will be their last, at least with the OGs, and without them it won’t survive. Just my opinion, feel free to feel different, lol!

        • I think you’re quite correct. They botched the new characters so badly they won’t really take off, and it’s too late to go back and try to make them feasible.

Usually when OG characters stick around it’s because the actors have some skin in the game (SVU) or they really enjoy what they’re doing (Chicago Fire seems to fall into this group). If they don’t, and are talented, it’s only a matter of time before things fold. At this point the smart move to me would be to plan a sendoff season not unlike either Five-O or NCIS NO. Wrap up at least some of the loose ends.

You talk about Mosley below, M, and maybe she kept a tight leash on the team. But it was for her own purposes (not unlike what Hetty did). They never managed to find balance once Granger was gone, and it shows. That’s my broken record…once Granger was gone they either needed to replace him immediately (filling that balancing role with Hetty) or start figuring out how to spin the show down gracefully. They did neither, and here we are.

          • Yes, absolutely, I agree.

I don’t think any actors have any stake in this show. ECO already started making his break at least a couple of years ago with Cloud Nine Prods. Very smart move on his part.

I think a wrap up with tying up loose ends should have started last season, as opposed to starting a new story arc such as Kessler. After seeing the first 3 eps of this season, I don’t see much of a decent wrap up, which really should have started with ep 1.

I’m not sure where DR would go. Aside from the show, she hasn’t really done anything (in the US) but a couple of guest hosts on ET. I think she really is a very talented actor but so ingrained with the part of Kensi (and especially “Densi”) I would have a hard time seeing her in anything else, especially if their is any romance involved.

Like you I can’t see Dani ( in this country) being with someone else ( Eric) or in another series ,, lol cool j is a singer, so no problem , Chris has acted .. other actors have left series and tried other shows or series and it hasn’t worked out well. Others have done ok. Hard to love. I know 13 years a long time., but I really wish they would have gone back to the basics of the show, the 4 interactions kensi, deeks, Callen and Sam. Eric and Nell are gone but enjoyed them in opts. And the way they put in Fatima and roundtree didn’t work for the fans. And I agree they have done more for Hetty , she deserved a better send off. She derserved that. And if by chance it’s the last season , then end it with a wonderful send off to all the actors that have put their heart and soul into NCIS la. That we never knew where Hetty went in Season 10
That we never found out why she was so unhappy in Season 11 after Mother
The ridiculous lack of Hetty/Callen scenes the past couple of years (I really miss them! I don’t just want off screen confirmation of their phone calls, I want an on screen call!)
The fact that there hasn’t been a Hetty/Sam scene in, who knows how long

And other things that I can’t think of at this time

  22. I was thinking about what this year’s Christmas episode might be about (it’ll be either Episode 10 or 11), and then I was thinking about how or if they’ll have Hetty in it this year, and then I got a little sad.

The last time she in LA for the episode was in Season 11 (and she wasn’t even in the episode!), and the last time we saw her in the office in the episode was Season 8. (Appearing on a screen in the office doesn’t count).

I wish there was a possibility that she could be in LA for Christmas this year, except that most likely won’t happen. She’ll probably only show up either on a screen, or on the phone. (and we probably won’t get to see where she is at either.)

Just, really sad possibilites there. Especially when she’s the team member that is the most excited about Christmas.

And thank you for listening to this really bummer of a post!

  23. We’re here for you Maria. I just hope you are wrong this time. I hope Santa brings you Hetty on your screen this Christmas. Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas.

Some people don’t believe in Father Christmas.

    • Thank you very much. 🙂
Christmas is one of my favorite holidays. I celebrate every year. (mainly by seeing how many Christmas movies I can watch on Hallmark and other channels.) (in fact, watching 1 or 2 Christmas movies each night for the past 2 weeks keeps my mind off this show in a negative way.)

The yearly Christmas episode of this show is typically 1 of my favorites every Season. Course, that streak stopped after Season 8. (even though I somewhat liked Season 9’s episode, the whole team celebrating while Hetty was being held captive just feels wrong now) (Season 10’s had that emotional mention of not just Hetty but Granger and Harley at the end, and I don’t consider Season 11 to have a Christmas episode because well, Answers was anything BUT holiday related, or very answer-y!) (Last year’s was the 1st 1 I really enjoyed since Tidings we Bring, mainly because of how it ended.)

I hope my bummer of a post ends up being wrong as well. 🙂

      • I rather liked ‘Free Ride’ the Season 4 Christmas episode, I don’t really know why. I haven’t got as far as the Season 12 Christmas episode yet, I’ve only watched ‘The Bear’ so far. Do you think we will get into trouble for talking about Christmas when it’s still October? Does it matter?

I always find each episode is never what I expect. Keep expecting the worst, and hope for the best. You never know……

      • I liked the Christmas ending where Kensi unexpectedly showed up with cookies she supposedly baked herself and imagines the scene of having a cat fight with Anna over “her team”, which of course never happens!

    • I know no one asked for my opinion but, for me, my favorite Christmas episode it’s a tie between ” Free Ride” & “Cancel Christmas ” but also love the one in S02 Where we found about Kensi’s past & Hetty was a re-gifter that was awesome. I missed that kind of writing. SIGH.

      • We all give our opinions freely, I always enjoy yours. Yes I enjoyed ‘Cancel Christmas’ too. Also ‘All is Bright’, I think, whatever the one where Deeks got his motorcycle back, probably only temporarily. I liked the scene in the bar too.

I hope everybody, well somebody, enjoyed last night’s episode. I’ve read one review and they didn’t hate it. So I am optimistic.
