NCISLA Case Briefing: “Driving Miss Diaz” (S7E3)

“Driving Miss Diaz” – The NCIS Los Angeles team investigates a 20-year old Peruvian massacre after a well-known fashion model, believed to be one of the survivors, is now a potential target. Also, Kensi goes undercover as the model’s assistant and Deeks as her chauffeur, on NCIS: LOS ANGELES, Monday, Oct. 5 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT), on the CBS Television Network. Written by: Andrew Bartels | Directed by: James Hanlon

The team needs to protect a model? Cue the unrelenting joking, mocking, and sarcastic comments from pretty much every member of the team! Why might this woman remain a target? Is it believed she has incriminating information about the crime? Perhaps she has recall information potentially useful as evidentiary testimony? Is this woman the key to capturing and imprisoning the criminals or simply an innocent victim of circumstance?

Is this aspect of the operation simply an effort to keep the woman safe or is she being used as bait to lure the criminals into the team’s trap? We know it’s a significant plan when the “wizard behind the curtain” Operations Manager Hetty is a prime player in the ploy! Hetty as the shoot director? (Normally she’s simply the Director of Shooting – of the weapons variety!) Can you imagine being the subject of Hetty’s purposeful Gorgon stare? Hopefully, they are going for a look of paralyzed fear! Perhaps they can use it for the cover of Stealth Magazine (rather than the referenced Roseline)! (Yeh, I made that up, but there’s no doubt Nell and Eric could create that as part of backstopping!)

It’s nice to see members of our “gang” returning to their undercover roots. Callen and Sam appear to be assigned as Tech techs. How much effort was required of the Wonder Twins to adequately prep the bantering brothers for this insertion? Kensi easily morphs into an agent’s assistant. Kudos to writer Andrew Bartels for addressing the fact Kensi could just as easily be the model in this case. It’s no wonder the actual model voices her displeasure in comparing herself to the elegant and stunning federal agent.

Although this mission puts poor Kensi back into another pantsuit. How might Deeks again apply his famous correlation of the wardrobe choice to presidential contender Hillary Clinton? On the topic of suits, Deeks finds himself similarly attired. Since this is wikiDeeks, it’s completely appropriate to highlight the following: Deeks. In. A. Suit. (Feel free to take a moment to appreciate that image!) More of this please (especially since Miss Diaz declares how “the homeless look’s out of style”! (Hopefully this also indicates the retirement of such unflattering covers as Homeless Deeks and Janitor Deeks. Oh that horrible gray jumpsuit….)

Back to this week’s case, Deeks is actually fronting as a chauffeur. Interesting. How might Kensi endure literally being out of her normal driver’s seat? Now that Densi has settled into their official status, we can surmise this will be a far smoother transition for Kensi than in the past. Yes, now she’s far more at ease with the detective taking the lead.

Deeks’ Week: Will this be just another week with another case, or will some lingering issues complicate his work and life? When might the growing clues related to the IA investigation take center stage? Will there be further explanation of the brief (and fully unexplained) appearance of Mama Deeks?

  1. After the tension of last Monday episode (Talia and her behavior with Deeks, Talia and Deeks undercover, IA investigation going on, Deeks’s mum out of the blue), we probably need some “relief”, so I expect this episode to be nothing more than a filler. I hope a well-done filler, anyway, with a nice undercover op for Kensi and Deeks (I liked their sneak peek!) and some action.
Everything that exceeds these very standard expectations will be welcome, though.

Thanks, Gayle, for this case briefing. I took your advice and felt free to appreciate the image of “Deeks. In. A. Suit.” 😉
