Just to Be Safe: Drabble 5/19/23
A/N: I’m not entirely sure if this fits within the episode timeline. It’s a little on the lighter side, but I hope you still enjoy.
“OK, maybe I am being a little paranoid, but you have to admit, we’re getting just the tiniest bit older, we have a teenage daughter now, and it’s not the most normal thing in the world to have food poisoning for a week straight. Especially not the fortress that is my wife,” Deeks continued while they waited for something to happen.
“And your fortress of a wife is completely fine as long as she doesn’t eat anything with sugar, dairy, texture, or flavor,” Kensi responded, slanting her eyes in Deeks’ direction. She held his gaze for a moment to show the full depths of her continued displeasure with the situation, and discomfort, before turning her attention back to the scope of her rifle.
“Right. And a couple of years ago, you would be eating, I don’t know, an açaí bowl or a box of donut holes.”
“Hey! I am very healthy.”
Deeks snorted. “Baby, you can try to make Rosa believe that all you want, but we all know that deep down, you are a junk food junkie. Which is fine. It’s something I love about you.” He paused before adding. “Now quit trying to change the subject.”
“Oh, you mean the one where you basically called me old?” Kensi asked.
“Not old. Older. And significantly younger than me.”
Kensi seemed appeased by his clarification. Her continued silence though, strongly hinted that she was ready to be done with this particular discussion.
Scooting closer, Deeks kept his gaze on the scene in front of them. “Hey, I get that this isn’t a fun thing to talk about, but I am kind of worried about you. We have so much to look forward to, people we need to be around for,” he murmured. He glanced at Kensi briefly, who had gone completely still. “I can’t stand to think of this being more than just some bad food.”
Beside him, Kensi sighed, pulling her hat a little lower. He saw her shoulders fall in resignation. “Fine. I will go back to the doctor and get some labs done.” She raised a finger. “But I will absolutely not be getting a fully-body scan of any type.”
“I can live with that,” Deeks said, reaching over to squeeze her hand. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” Kensi squeezed back. “Now grab me a cup of applesauce.”
