Review: NCISLA “Getaway” (S8E18)

In this week’s episode, “Getaway”, Nell and Eric are sent undercover inside a couple’s retreat after the U.S. Treasury Department is hacked and the crime is linked to a local tech savvy husband and wife. Several terabytes of data are stolen and could jeopardize unspecified counter-terrorism operations, so the team from NCIS gets involved.

This particular story was penned by Erin Broadhurst and directed by Tony Wharmby. Erin gave us a view of Nell’s interrogation techniques in “Sirens” and she writes another episode that provides us with another view of the analyst out in the field. Tony is back in the director’s chair after a long absence since last helming “Fighting Shadows” back in Season 6. He gave some wonderful character moments between Kensi and Deeks, as well as Callen and Joelle, in “Humbug”.

In the casting department, Scott Grimes guest stars as Digital Forensics Specialist Dave Flynn who we saw in action back in “Red” and “Red 2” and just when you thought she was voted off the island, Joelle Taylor is back, brought to us by the talented Elizabeth Bogush. The regular crew is all here, joined once again by the beautiful Bar Paly as Anna Kolcheck and Miguel Ferrer’s absence is already causing me to miss Owen’s sly smirk.

Fair winds and following seas, Miguel … you will be missed.

Now, onto this week’s offering.

For the setup, we have an opening in a fancy restaurant, which starts with two fellows enjoying their ‘Captain’s Chair’, watching their meal prepared as they continually toast to apparently anything. When one receives a phone call, there’s a sudden shift, an injection to the neck and the party’s over with a dead guy on the floor.

At the mission, we have Callen and Sam entering with confusing talk about “body day” for someone named Jennifer. Turns out, Sam is referencing his unquenchable love for his 70’s Challenger that gives us the “gut-punch” recovery and a “you gotta move on and get over it”… a little foreshadowing for Hetty’s little side mission for Callen. This is the usual bromance conversation that we get from these two with a perplexed Eric added to get them up to operations and the case at hand.

After the team is briefed, we have Hetty splitting up Sam and Callen, sending the team leader off on a mysterious errand while partnering the former SEAL with Anna. Instead of my favorite couple, Hetty correctly assigns Nell and Eric as the loving duo headed to the retreat to get close to the married computer techs,Tara and Paul Nelson, as Kensi and Deeks are to provide security overwatch.

The case unfolds as both Paul and Tara act pretty normal when they first meet Eric and Nell but it soon becomes apparent that they are hiding something. When Tara chokes up while discussing her sister during the couple’s confession moment, it leads to Nell pushing the issue by mentioning the loss of her sibling. Tara’s reaction was indicative of her own concerns for her sister who we soon learn has been abducted as insurance of compliance from the husband and wife techs.

As the team closes in and the buyer(s) seek to eliminate all of the parties evolved, Eric and Nell find a frightened Tara and a pretty beaten up Paul who are only concerned about saving Tara’s sister. Eric and Nell take off in pursuit but Kensi and Deeks are hampered by the antique RV that Hetty put them in for the mission. With a few well placed shots to the spare gas can strapped to the back of the SUV in which the bad guy is attempting to escape, Eric gives him a fiery send-off.

The previews for this episode probably gave most of us a double-take when Hetty announces that instead of Kensi and Deeks going undercover as couple, it will instead be … drum roll, if you please … Nell and Eric!

Sigh.

Now, before all of you Neric shippers grab your pitchforks and light the torches, I am not trying to down the togetherness that is growing between the two techies from Operations. Eric and Nell’s relationship has been growing in pace with the show itself and the interactions between them, while at times clumsy and awkward, bring some needed levity at some points and are downright adorable at others. Barrett and Renee have great personal chemistry and they infuse that into their characters but not with the smoldering sexual tension that we endured between Kensi and Deeks for far too long that Eric and Daniella bring to life so well.

My concern is that it appears that the Office of Special Projects is slowing morphing into another shade of O.S.P. – the Office of Sexual Partners. We already have Deeks and Kensi, who are well on their way to … hopefully … a ring, “I do’s”, and a happily ever after, Callen and Anna are being thrown together for what I hope is a brief “fling” and not a long term relationship, and now we have Eric and Nell inching their way into something deeper as well. It all has the feel that the show is moving from a dramatic presentation of the war on terrorism to a watered down soap opera where everyone is busy … well … getting “busy”. While romantic aspects can add to the drama, if there are too many couples who live and work together, they may overshadow the main point of the show.

The title is NCIS:LA, that stands for Naval Criminal Investigative Service … which means that the cases should involve the Department of the Navy, have some type of crime going on, a systematic investigation and eventual conclusion to the case. It was fun watching Kensi and Deeks slowly circle each other until they finally went “All in” with an occasional additional relationship thrown into the subplot (think Callen and Joelle … Nate and Rose), but with one more romance between lead characters, it worries me that this may overshadow the core theme which is taking down terrorists and evil masterminds.

I will let this topic go for the time being as I’m confident that it will be hashed out in the comments section at the bottom of the page. So, feel free to express your thoughts and opinions (that’s all I just did) and let us know how you feel about Nell and Eric’s progression as a couple and whether you think it will enhance or be a detriment to the show.

Where’s Callen going all by himself?

We get an awkward meeting between the former CIA operative and Joelle (Beth) with what appear to be her family and then an even harsher face-to-face at the boatshed. This woman, who shouldn’t be trusted as far as she could be thrown, lays it out that while she and Callen were involved with each other, she apparently had a son and a husband waiting for her back at home. Ka-boom! Sam commented about a ‘gut-punch’… this was more like a gut-punch with a head-butt, followed by a kick to the nom de plumes, chased by a poke to the eye and then a pile drive onto a concrete slab. Joelle, or Beth… whoever she is… was both cold and even cruel in her response to Callen; treating him more like something she stepped on on the sidewalk rather than a man she had been in a relationship with.

Callen, revealing that he was indeed truly stunned, looks like he’s been slapped when she confesses to the ‘family’ that is waiting for her at home. Now, even if what she says is total bull, having your emotions played with like that has to have hurt even Callen’s stalwart heart. From what Sam said as they entered the Mission and Hetty’s words at the conclusion, I think that is what has them concerned for their friend and teammate, with even Anna commenting on how Callen seems to be “off”.

I believe Hetty is worried that he may be withdrawing into his familiar lone wolf persona, foregoing any deep personal relations outside of his little family at the OSP. The lack of furniture in his house when she interrupted his and Anna’s moment might have been just another clue as to his state of mind. Sending him off to Joelle’s (Beth’s) home and forcing a confrontation is just Hetty’s way of getting him to face up to the hurt and move on without rebuilding the walls around his heart.

Callen has grown though the course of the show: hunting for the truth about his family, finding out about his family’s violent end, discovering his father is still alive, meeting his father and then unearthing the fact that he now has a sister and a nephew. Retreating now could cost him all that he has longed for his entire life …a real family.

Sam gets a new partner!

Poor Sam… he’s all excited about working on his car and then he finds himself partnered up with Anna. Say what you will (and I agree with most of the critiques about her), Anna seemed to work well with the big guy, giving as good as she got, following his lead at the crime scenes and with the rescue of the missing sister. I really loved the moment when she asks him how he copes with the demands of the job and taking only a moment to think about it, confesses that he talks to his wife, Michelle. Beautifully played there LL Cool J and well written Erin; it is both honest and poignant. The “nothing beats having someone listen to you who gets it” may be a glimpse that Anna is going to be around for Callen to confide in, among other… ahem… activities.

Roughing it in the middle of nowhere

Assigned to security overwatch for this mission, I was expecting a little more in two areas: Deeks and Kensi’s interactions and the RV itself. I’m going to tackle the RV first as it was the most glaring inconsistency in the story. My first impression was that they had disguised a super-d-duper secret agent spy van inside an antique RV so that the bad guys wouldn’t be suspicious. I was expecting a retractable drone launch pad in the roof, super encrypted spyware hidden behind the cabinets, thermal vision windshields and a turbo charged engine that could catch a Formula One racer. Instead, apparently, one of the world’s premiere spy agencies sends out its operatives in Dale’s dilapidated Winnebego from The Walking Dead.

One question though, did Deeks seem a little preoccupied? I figure that he has the IA investigation flittering around in his head but he appeared a little distant at the beginning. His comments about the outdoors came off as a little more apprehensive than his normal fear of being out in the desert too long without the proper moisturizer or enough water. I wonder if there is something from his past that might still haunt him. Hmmm.

While the Densi was fairly light with the two of them left alone out in the middle of the woods with no cameras or adult supervision, there were a few moments they did shine.

Kensi: By the way, your NSA agent friend, Michael, was really, really sweet … I love your ability to just make friends.
Deeks: I have lots of friends because I have a super secret way of making them.
Kensi: Picking up people’s bar tabs is not what I would call a super secret method.
Deeks: How did you know that?
Kensi: Because you did it to me, goofball!
Deeks: Well, picking up somebody’s bar tab is foolproof, but when you’re breaking the ice, never underestimate the strategically placed celebrity impression from a nice ’80s movie.
Kensi: Like what?
Deeks: Next time you’re hangin’ out with somebody new, try dropping a quote from Pretty In Pink and see what happens.
Kensi: Okay, I’ll try that.
Deeks (as Arnold Swarzeneggar): Get to the chopper!
Kensi: Predator! I love that movie!
Deeks (as Arnold again): We have to save California.
Kensi is still laughing.
Deeks: See, it’s charming and endearing, a sense memory… you cannot resist my Awrnold.
Kensi: No, I can’t resist… you!

Sweet right? Yeah, I added that last line from Kensi, but her smile was screaming it so loud, you couldn’t miss it. I’m sure the editors accidentally left that part out. I was sad to see another ‘love tap’ earlier when Deeks was playing his miniature violin… I hope that we aren’t headed back toward that thorny issue. They’ve moved so far past that, and it has been awhile since we’ve seen it, so it really felt out of place to me.

And the new Doc Holiday and Wyatt Earp

Their interactions were cute and honest but Eric’s confession about when he first knew he was in love with her… wow, I think that even caught Nell off-guard. “How amazing you are with me” should probably be on a Hallmark card by now and was the perfect statement from the sometimes verbally awkward Eric Beale.

Eric: We were friends before, but… that’s when everything changed… that’s when I knew… that’s when I knew I was in love with you.

Swwwweeeeeeeeettttttttt. Good job Beale!

Like I stated earlier about this particular couple, it’s not the couple themselves, it’s the overabundance of couples we seem to have at this time. I read a comment that said something along the lines that the show may be pushing Eric and Nell because they are going to mess with Densi. (If that’s the case, I’m prepared to riot.) It may also be that, for some unknown reason, happy and contented couples who have moved into the serious-let’s-get-married-and-settle-down may appear boring and in need of replacement by a younger or more exciting pair.

If that’s the level of creativity from the powers that be, then Houston, we have a problem. With the dangerous job that they have, marital stress would be the least of their worries, whether it’s Kensi and Deeks, Nell and Eric, Sam and Michelle, or Callen and <choke … gag> Anna.

This is also where I have to point out that some companies and the Federal Government have strict policies about dating between co-workers, especially in areas of high security or restricted information. If fraternization isn’t controlled, the work place becomes overwhelmed with drama and is ripe for discord and hurt feelings. For that reason, superiors cannot date anyone under their authority and in most agencies, partners are not allowed to date each other. This is one reason I suspect that Deeks hasn’t become an actual Agent, because he fears having his and Kensi’s partnership split up.

While this is a fictional show, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service is an actual organization that investigates criminal activity involving the Department of the Navy, including the United States Marine Corps. When the rules are bent to such a degree for the drama of the show, I sometimes feel like it loses its authenticity. Call me a stickler, but that’s how I call it.

Words of wisdom

“I like to look at something familiar from a new perspective.”

Henrietta says this while perched on the couch in the back of the bullpen, giving her a different view of the room that she doesn’t normally see from her office. Callen picks up on her double meaning instantly; he needed to see Joelle for who she really is and not who she appeared to be to him. Then the comment about facing one’s pain head on and cauterizing the wounds, being truly brave, only made me appreciate the care Hetty has for the team. I know, that at times, her efforts seem off-point or even self-serving, but I do think that deep in her core, she does try to have their best interests at heart. When she tells him that he should be proud of his team, I was hoping he was going to say “I always am”.

Overall, to me this was a decent episode, but I felt like I didn’t get to know the secondary characters well enough to really care what happened to them. I know, that sounds cold, but there was so much time dedicated to the regular crew, that the case and those it involved barely held my attention.

It was one thing I noticed about the last episodes, “Queen Pin” and “Old Tricks”, that they are loading us up with story lines, trying to tell us too many tales at the same time. Usually, we have the main case, the team interactions and one smaller side story. In some episodes, we’ve had the main story, two lesser side bars and two more little tag-alongs that only take away more time that should have gone to better character development. Spreading our attention spans too thin makes it hard to follow any one particular story, and these stories all deserve to be told. Let’s keep it simple folks… big case, partner banter, underlying drama and threat, creative investigation and exciting conclusion (even a sad one from time to time to add realism wouldn’t hurt either).

Well, there’s my take on “Getaway” and please, take it for what it is … rambling thoughts and opinions expressed by someone who loves the show but sometimes feels the need to point out some things that don’t sit right. Let us know what you think; about the episode, the show in general, even the knucklehead who was asked to write a review this week.

I can’t wait to see how you all feel about “Getaway” and the characters we love so much. Let us know.

Semper Fi.

  1. Good review, let me say that first. It is very much appreciated by me and something I look forward to after every episode.

I’ve wanted to like this season, I really have, but I don’t. I know they’ve had a lot to deal with. I really do sympathize. But there’s no depth there right now. It’s a going-through-the-motions feeling. The writing definitely and even the acting — it feels like they’re almost doing impressions of themselves, characterizations of themselves. I’m not feeling invested in the characters or storylines. And I hate that. I’m hoping things will change with the next season which will (fingers crossed) not have so much chaos behind the scenes.

  2. Marine…you can really make me laugh. Your crack about the RV being a dilapidated Winnebago from The Walking Dead had me practically snorting my morning coffee out my nose. During the mad chase I felt like I was watching one of the Vacation movies and kept waiting for the rattlely thing to turn over. And someone should explain how two techs on foot could reach the bad guy in a car before Kensi and Deeks. A little wacky for me and a bit unbelievable. I think Nell and Eric are cute together, but I thought it was going overboard to have a little make out session right after Eric blows the guy up. This was the sweet tech who didn’t think he could shoot somebody in his first undercover assignment in that episode about the rockets. And earlier this season he hesitated to send in a lethal drone strike, but now he is all cavalier and thinks nothing of killing a guy and celebrating by kissing his partner. It was disconcerting. I liked the old Eric Beale. He was sensitive and kind. I’m not sure who this guy is.

I must say the most interesting part of this episode was Callen and Joelle. Callen looked truly shaken when he discovered her with a supposed family. Whether that is really her family is a good question, but either way her response to Callen in this episode is cold blooded and shocking. Joelle is the epitome of a professional CIA operative and the actress made that real for me. I’m not sure if it hurt Callen’s heart or if it stunned him that she was able to fool him so completely. But all of this left me with questions. The CIA is not supposed to operate on American soil. I know this was a rogue group, but if she was in league with them, why isn’t she in jail, and if she is not in league with them, who assigned her to get close to Callen? Is Sabatino her boss or is it someone higher up. If that is the case, the mole story isn’t over.

Great review, Mr. Steele. I agree we are maxing out the show’s couple togetherness quotient. It’s all getting to be too much. Next, we’ll find out Hetty is having an affair with the new guy coming on board and soon there won’t be any room for a case at all.

  3. Very good review.

I was also taken aback by that “love tap.” I thought the writers (and maybe DR, because she has been known to improvise punches and such) had figured out that this type of thing is extremely unpopular amongst a significant number of fans and is better left in the past. I also wish they had added a line, as you did, of true appreciation for Deeks’ interpersonal skills, instead of leaving it to be implied that he has to buy friendship. After all, he certainly didn’t cover the bar tabs of his burly cell mates in Under Siege, and yet he managed not to get beat up by a bunch of guys who probably would like nothing better than to beat up an undercover cop. I haven’t disliked the Densi interactions this much in a long time.

  4. JS, I really enjoyed your review. Nice job.

I can’t add anything to what has already been said by you or Lindy. You both pretty much covered how I felt. I’ve enjoyed much of this season, and yet at the same time I have this empty feeling inside. What peakae mentioned; that she felt the actors were doing impressions of themselves – after much thought, I agree with that assessment. As I said, I’ve really enjoyed certain scenes from many of the episodes this season, Getaway included, but as a whole it just feels like things are off the mark. Almost forced…

  5. I know I’m in the minority, but the “love tap” didn’t bother me. The reason why I say that is because on the mother ship if Tony ever brought out & pretended to play an imaginary mini violin Gibbs would have slapped him upside the head quicker than you can say “Gibbsslap”.

    • Not a valid comparison. Gibbs and Tony don’t have the same kind of relationship that Kensi and Deeks do. At least, not in canon. 😉

      • No but they are like family & Gibbs is a father figure to Tony.

      • I understand the correlation, but although neither is okay, i think a head slap from you older brother or father figure would be taken differently that being punched by the love of your life and potential spouse.

then there is the whole history thing…Dinozzo wasn’t beaten on throughout his childhood by someone that was supposed to love him like Deeks was.
knowing Deeks past, I am sad that Kensi still does that.
        Just my thoughts.

  6. Great Review!!

It does seem to be getting a “Love Boat” air to the series. While many law enforcement agencies do frown on and forbid partners from being involved, there is a don’t ask don’t tell attitude and hook ups happen every day. 50% of the time they work out.

We are asked to suspend disbelief for one hour every week and I think that Densi has passed the tests and should be left alone and allowed to grow.

Since the CIA isn’t allowed to operate within the borders of the USA, how is Joelle not in jail?

Since they got the renewal for next year, we can only hope that they’ll move forward to solving crimes and not looking for moles. Looking forward to next year already, because this year hasn’t been so great.

  7. I loved this review! Very good job.
I have some things I didn’t like about this episode and some I did (not many, to be honest).

    What I didn’t like:

    – The total disaster the authors have made with Joelle’s character. I really liked her even if we had seen her character in so few episodes, I don’t care now if she was the right woman for Callen or not, this is not the point, I only find it hard to forgive the authors for having ruined her past episodes only to find a cheap solution to the never-ending mole hunt and at the same time find an easy way to make Anna appear as Callen’s saving angel. Making Joelle be a heartless and only mission-focused CIA operative who had a husband and a three-year-old kid at home while dancing and drinking wine with Callen honestly seems a cruel disservice to her character.

    – I have never seen Nell and Eric as a potential couple, they have always seemed more like friends to me (especially Nell’s mixed signals to Eric) and I would have liked the writers to leave them that way, without creating another workplace romance. I’m glad for all the Neric fans, though, even if I hope the Neric-centered episodes will just be exceptions like this one…

    – I honestly expected more from the Densi overwatch scenes, either serious conversations (possible hundreds would come to my mind!) or funny interactions and banter I have missed so much lately. I think we got neither. The dialogs seemed quite forced and didn’t transmit me much. Kensi seemed quite annoyed by Deeks and honestly her “punch” didn’t seem playful at all (her facial expression was indeed angry). I thought her character had progressed well from that old habit and this regression is a big disappointment. I wonder why the authors can’t decide once and for all if Kensi has grown up or not. I think Season 7 Kensi has been the best version of her so far. This season I admit I expected more, much more, from Deeks and Kensi together after her disability and recovery arc, there would have been plenty of opportunities for something beautiful to end that emotional storyline, lots of missing moments we can only imagine but that could have made the difference in just a few minutes’ scenes.

    What I liked

    – The scene in which an undercover Eric explained to a quite astonished Nell the moment he had fallen in love with her. Even if I have already said I’m not a Neric fan and I’m sure I won’t start now to be one, I think Barrett was great in that scene, really great, and was able to convey so many emotions. He made me believe he was telling the truth!
    – Sam: his scenes with Anna worked a lot, thanks to Sam obviously (I’m sorry, I still don’t get Anna’s character) and I hope the season finale won’t hurt him too much.

Thanks again for this amazing review!

    • To be fair Deeks was being a jerk to Nell & Eric. If anyone else on the team pulled the invisible violin routine on Deeks everyone would be in an uproar. I’ll have to rewatch to see Kensi’s face, but if she were angry a bit then maybe Deeks shouldn’t have made fun of Nell & Eric.

      • If you watch the scene carefully; he didn’t do the violin scene concerning Eric & Nell; he did it when the other couple were speaking & the woman was talking about finding a wounded bird, etc.

Yes, YES! They have done such a disservice to the characters and the fans by not having ANY resolution to that highly emotional arc! What should have been a nice Densi scene two episodes ago when’s she telling him, ” I have you, and that’s all I care about,” instead just left me thinking “You had him after you woke up from the coma, too, but that wasn’t enough for you then. That wasn’t all that mattered during your rehab!” There needed to be some type of scene — and yes, it only needed to take a few minutes — that gave her a chance to explain why, at one of the lowest points of her life, she wanted nothing to do with the man she proclaims to want to spend the rest of her life with. If she couldn’t bring herself to lean on him at a time like that, why even get married at all? It all just comes across as hollow to me now. And I don’t know how they can fix it at this point.

I was thinking last night about how there are always several good episodes to choose between when we vote for our favorite Densi episode to get the ECO/DR commentary on the DVD. So far this season I can only come up with a couple of candidates, and neither would make the cut stacked up against any contenders from previous seasons. And honestly, it’s not just Densi that has suffered this season. The show as a whole has been so disjointed. Yes, they had to work around DR’s pregnancy and MF’s health issues, but I’ve been mostly disappointed from the very first episode, when Kensi was suddenly adamantly against having kids, even though she spent an entire episode last season with the complete opposite opinion on the matter. I really, REALLY hope the news of the show’s renewal will bring back some cohesion and, as has been mentioned, a return to the format of having the team all working together on the same case.

      Also: Anna. Must. Go.

      • She wasn’t against having kids at all. She just said that she wasn’t ready yet. & I think last year if Deeks had made it clear that he just wasn’t ready to have kids in the immediate future she would have been OK but based on his initial reaction to the magazine she felt that he never wanted kids. & considering how he has offered to have Nina assassins with her for years then to act like it will never happen now that they are in a real relationship, I can see her being upset. Not being ready at the current point in time doesn’t mean never. She was more clear than Deeks IMO. and about her rehab, it is not unusual for people that suffered the same trauma that she did to push loved ones away. Her telling him that he is the only thing that matters to her is showing the lesson she learned. That lesson was its OK to let the people you love help you & that they’ll never give up on you. Daniela actually said recently that she learned that hardest thing for people that actually suffered from Kensi’s type of injuries was to ask for help & it was OK to lean on others. One more thing Deeks did the same exact thing to her after his torture and she new he loved her even then because he kissed her on the bike. and let’s not forget the fact she forgave him without hesitatiob lying to her face for months about IA & never told her the truth until after the fact.

        • I do understand why Kensi pushed Deeks away. I’m just not so sure Deeks understands why. How many weeks did we watch him moping around, first when she was unconscious and then when she woke up but kept pushing him away. And even after she was back home, not wanting to bike with him, not wanting to go on hikes or to the beach, as he confided to Sam. It would not have killed the writers to insert a scene in which they addressed it once and for all. Of course he forgives her anyway because he loves her and is so grateful she’s OK. But to have dragged it out for as long as they did and then not resolve it on-screen is unfair to the viewers who tuned in each week, IMHO. The point of my earlier rant is that the writers just don’t really seem to be trying very hard this season, and it shows. At some point if they don’t start caring again, a lot of viewers are going to stop caring, as well.

And to reiterate an earlier point:

          Anna. Must. Go.

there were so many little things that they could have done that would have meant so much.
The small retails seemed to get forgotten.
yes, there is always the case of the week, case chases and gunfire, so to speak.
but for the loyal fans that watch every week, the serialized portions of the show matter just as much if not more…and they have been either indiscriminately changed, completely ignored, outright butchered…or at the very least, incompletely of poorly handled.

it is like there were so many plot lines, so many things in motion…so much chaos…
that the continuity, the quality control and over site suffered.

they need to get back on track and focused…

        • Being ok to ask for help is a great lesson. I’m not sure the show actually showed that Kensi asked for help. If she did I missed it. All they did show is Kensi pushing Deeks away countless times. Then all of a sudden Kensi is making these grand gestures which seems out of the blue from previous episodes. Dani and producers have explained what kensi’s supposed to be feeling and that she’s supposed to be having good days and bad days throughout her recovery but the show has actually failed to convey that effectively. This season has felt flat and disjointed. Other than the scenes of a Kensi first waking up and learning she might not walk again, I have found Dani’s acting not on par with previous seasons. Her acting lately seems forced and she doesn’t deliver her lines like she used to. The scene from last season where she tells Deeks it doesn’t matter where she has breakfast as long as he’s there made you believe how much she loved Deeks. The line from the previous ep where she tells Deeks that she has him (I forget the actual line) was flat and I wasn’t really convinced. It didn’t have the usual Kensi fire. I want so much to like this season but I haven’t watched many of the episodes because it lacked the real emotions and chemistry of previous seasons. Plus there’s way too much Anna and Neric for me. So for the rambling. Ed would say this more eloquently.

          • Sadly I agree. I get both DR and ECO recently have had babies and it must have been hard to balance everything with a newborn (and a toddler) at home, but they both often seem very tired when delivering their lines, and this may also be the reason why some of Kensi’s scenes of the second part of the season fell quite flat in my opinion, as you said, Daisy, “without the usual Kensi fire”.

          • I totally agree with what you wrote about Kensi asking for help, and just one good scene had made a huge difference. (This is exactly what I hoped to see, Kensi asking for help and accepting it and also that the job doesn’t define her, that she is more than just the job).
I have missed Kensi fire too, for me personally the problem has been more the writing and maybe editing than the acting, it feels like something happened around 8×08 and 8×09 that made things “off the rail” and that is when it felt like all those inconsistencies and out of character behaviour really started to “bother me”, but I hope that they get “back on track” during these final episodes of the season.

OOC, jumbled and not really tied together very well, a shift in behavior, ect..

I think it is due to some rushed editing of the story arc,,,

look back to those episodes you mentioned. Not when they aired, but when they were filmed, or even just before the table reads…
..the show had ratings up 25% from the previous year, they had just got the 2 episodes back that were cut before the start of the season…back up to 24 instead of 22…
the buzz was good and a season 9 seemed far more likely thay a couple of months previously when the season story was roughed out…

they were trying to close everything up in a nicer bow for the fans…
then, they realized they might paint themselves into a corner with a closed ended story arc…
              HEY…somebody put on the brakes….quick…

so, i think they redrafted the Kensi rehab, The Densi relationship, the mole arc…to give them some flexibility…
I do not in any way believe that what we have seen was what was planned before the season started…
they are working on the fly…and it shows

              Disclaimer:
just my opinion…no real facts were harmed in the production of this story…

but my personal feeling is that it is not the actors.
both Dani and Eric have said before that for the dramatic/ emotional scenes, that they do several takes with varying levels of emotion. they also mentioned that the directors usually take the most subtle and low key versions.
the showrunners use this to set the atmosphere around the couple.
I feel that they are intentionally downplaying the emotions between the couple to make the proposal a bigger surprise and event….

if everything is going great and they have all these wonderful moments this season…then the proposal would have to be epic…a true home run…

with a bunch of mediocre stuff going on…something barely above average will stand out like a shining star…

if it needs to stand out, it needs to rise above…or you just push everything else around it down…
I thing they promised this epic proposal…one well worth the wait and worthy of all the suspense…and have no idea how to make good on the promise.
I would bet that it may just not live up to all the hype and leave many disappointed.

Remember…they promised us the proposal and all this progress back when they thought episode 8-22 was likely the series finale.
now they are trying to figure out how to still do it and have it fit into a continuing show.
so, as is usual for this group…they applied the brakes…

…funny thing about applying the brakes…you slow the bus down too much and eventually people just get off and start walking…

you mentioned the scene in the van where Kensi tells Deeks having him is all she cares about being flat.
I agree and i think that is the way it was directed…
I think they wanted us to be aware that Deeks might be taken away soon and put a dark overtone on things.

this is one of those times that i think they did numerous takes and they chose to use the most subdued, dark, depressing one of the bunch…
I would bet that they did a take where Deeks smiled back, they touched foreheads, or even returned the kiss…and they chose to go darker…

  8. I enjoyed your review, good job subbing. I started asking why so many story lines last week? It’s like they want to completely separate the team for some reason? I thought Anna was better with Sam than Callen (kuddos to LL not Bar for sure). She is just terrible. I just hope all this moving around isn’t to try and figure a way to make her a permanent member PLEASE! I thought Kensi’s line about the easiness directing men should have been the quote of the week :-). I wasn’t terribly impressed with their interaction when the whole thing started but I thought their “bickering” got better as the surveillance progressed. I, too, was shocked at the punch! While I’m not a Neric fan either, I can conceed those that are deserved their “moment” just like we Densi people got in Humbug.
I agree with the comments about Joelle – they are working SO HARD to make us hate her after the fans seemed to like her (them together) a lot. I thought the acting was great between her and Callen, just hate the story, especially if it is intended to pave the way for Anna!!!! Please say it isn’t so!
Ah, and I now agree with JS – the Winnie should have been a “super van”!

he is a cop, has a gun,
has camped out on the beach, been attacked by bad guys, been undercover as a homeless person for extended periods, undercover with drug dealers and gun runners where he couldn’t be armed…and he is afraid to step outside in the woods…Bull!@#$..I just don’t by it

it is one of those overplayed props that the writers use to allow the team to make Deeks the butt of their jokes…the guy with the dunce hat…I guess I am just tired of it.

The writers had a golden opportunity to have Deeks connect with Kensi by participating with her in something she loved to do with her father as a child…
Kensi could have said…”I loved doing this with my dad , and now I want to share it with you…it is 20 years later, but I’m still here with the most important man in my life..”.
And instead they pooped all over it by taking the easy way out with cheep overplayed misplaced attempts at comedy and an overused foil.

  14. A small cannon issue.
    Deeks saying “some mores”
    Then getting corrected…
    Ridiculous.
Deeks mentioned it previously, even to Callen,
He talked about making Smorescakes and even talked about the recipe with Callen and others…was it with Granger?, about the graham cracker crumbles???
He was able to pronounce it correctly back then. Go figure
…then, knowing Kensi’s appetite, and love of sweets…does anyone actually believe that Deeks hasn’t made this delicious breakfast for Kensi before.
The conversation would have happened a long time ago.

So now he forgets how to pronounce one of his own breakfast creations…not likely…

These things happen when the writers don’t do their homework or at least review previous scripts.

Wouldn’t an aid, running a key word search have found the previous scene in about 37 seconds….then you read through the scene to see what happened, Right???
All the scripts wind up in a database, then when you bring back something, for example a bad guy…like Siderov…you go back and see what was said and done previously to stay true to the story.

It would seem like a standard procedure.

  16. I think that most of us understand that R Scott G was dealt a tough hand at the end of last year.
Turnover at the top, a bunch of unfinished story arcs, declining ratings, I believe that Eric and Renee weren’t under contract. Budget had to be cut. The show reduced the filming schedule from 8 days/ episode down to 7. Episodes were reduce down to 22 for the season from the usual 24 (which was reversed, by the way)…and so on Dani was going to need some time off for family, and so on
Then the show was moved again to a new time and night.
There was some talk that this would likely be the last season. (Not anymore).

So, I truly feel that Scott approached the season like he really cared about the story that was being told and the fans being made whole. They deserved answers, and he only had 22 episodes to do it.
I think the odd nature of this episode as well as some previous was due to the attempt to “check the boxes” on some of the open story arcs, close out some plot lines, answer some lingering questions and provide a situation to allow for some long-anticipated situations or pairings….
I think Scott had a list of things he wanted to do this season.

    Densi engagement
    Wrap up the mole issue
    What’s in the box
Make Hetty more likable, or repair her standing and trust with the team
    Have Callen find true love
Get the geeks in the field
    Make Nell an agent
    Get Eric and Nell undercover
A Neric relationship, or at least some romance
    Callen finds his family
Mix up the partners to provide the opportunity for all those conversations wanted
    Resolve the IA issue
    Get a Deeks, M episode
    Learn about Deeks past/ childhood
Touch on Kensi’s homeless period to Deeks
    And so on…

I truly respect Scott for compiling a list of things the fans deserve to see and making every effort to deliver closure or at least touch on as many of them as he could.

I think this episode is a product of trying to check some things off the list.
I think that some people have stated that things seemed disjointed or that they seemed to try to put too much into the episode a couple of times lately, and I feel that this might be the reason.
The filler episodes are being used to clear of the list.

That is my unscientific, uninformed and uneducated opinion…

    pulls away from Deeks

    gets betrayed and kidnapped
watches Nell and Anna do her job
watches Nell get romantic with Eric and move their relationship forward.
watches Anna get romantic with Callen

The Densi relationship appears to have been placed on the back burner.
I do not know if this was the plan all along, or the end of the season was left open depending on the renewal status, but after a great start of the season ratings wise, they seemed to apply the brakes to the relationship, possibly to save some things for next year.
I for one, am not happy about it.
I do believe there needs to be some balance in the show and the quota of romance has been consumed by couples other than Densi.
    Don’t like it…not one bit.

Not everyone needs a romantic interest…it has become a freakin’ soap opera.
Give it a rest, leave the romance to Kensi and Deeks, let people do their own jobs for a while, get a couple of real cases solved, and stop flipping a coin to see who works with who on a daily basis.

  22. I still don’t get Callen and Hetty’s reaction to Joelle/ Beth
The whole team does things like this all the time…
But that is okay, because they are all undercover operatives following orders to complete an assignment, weather they like it or not, it is necessary.
    …oh wait…Beth was too…damn it…I need to get off my soapbox…
Beth was an undercover agent following orders from a superior…deal with it.
I wonder if the bigger issue is that she played Sam, Michelle, Callen and Hetty for so long, and they like to feel that they are this great judge of character.

    I mean, think about it…
Callen thought he was playing Joelle, but it was the other way around…
It was all okay and acceptable when she was the mark and not him, right…hilarious isn’t it.
    It’s quite a list…
    Callen and Joelle
Callen and that girl Kristen Donnelly with the kid Michael, that looks just like him.
    Deeks and Ray’s wife Nicole
    Deeks and Monica
    Sam and Jada
Kensi and the guy in Command and Control…
….you don’t think she got a 3000 dollar dress and him to make all those comments and fall for her like that by just being fun to talk to. How far did she have to go? yuck.

The only real thing that Callen and Hetty have to be mad at… is themselves for being so completely fooled…
    GET OVER IT…

They really had to make Beth seem callous to promote the Anna relationship.
They could have just left it with her saying it was the job and she hates that part of it, the sacrifices for the cause, and so on…

This is just turning the tables and showing us (and Callen) that now Callen feels that way, and it’s a tough pill to swallow.

but rather than being mad at Beth, saying they hate her and calling her a bitch…

and I also agree that it serves the purpose to close the door on Joelle and her supporters, end the debate of Joelle vs Anna for Callen…and force feed Anna right down our throats.

I am not sure that this was the original intent for Joelle, but Anna was so poorly received, and the Joelle debate wouldn’t end…that they had to do something to end the controversy.

but, I do think she pushed Kensi to address her feelings about Deeks, why she was jealous…because she cared for him…
So, in a way, she pushed kensi to act on her feelings and not just dance around their thing…
they kinda owe her in a way.
also, she did back off once Densi became official, other than flirting to get under Kensi’s skin…but I feel that was harmless.
is she unprofessional..absolutely…but the entire team isn’t exactly a poster for political correctness or proper workplace behavior.

Marty went to Afghanistan to save Kensi and got a hug out of it.
He rescues her from a room full of lasers and gets a smile and “I gotta pee”.
He gets her back from Sullivan and gets a hug…

Then, Eric shoots one lousy car…as it drives away no less and was no longer a threat…and gets a big smooch…

    Eric got game…Marty be lame…
    Really…
Somebody needs to pull a Kensi kick to the groin on the writers to fix this egregious error…

Doesn’t he have a secret or 2 to keep. Both NCIS and CIA…

    Really???
It might be the most hypocritical double standard I have ever seen.
    Ludicrous…
I was obviously bothered by Callen/Anna…and now Nell/Eric just seems like a slap in the face…
    Irritated and confused.

Even when it is not their own team…there are constant roadblocks to Densi.

He doesn’t by in, isn’t excited about the RV or supportive of her.
He doesn’t make note of the fact that this was something she shared with her dad, brings back fond memories, and seems to be something she would like to share with Deeks…
For a guy that has always been portrayed as the guy that loves Kensi, puts her first, is sensitive to her needs, and keeps her happy by knowing her far better than anyone would believe…
The writers made him rather clueless and not paying attention…
Very disappointing and OOC for him right now…
    Odd, and a little sad.

The writers have invested a huge amount of time and effort into the Densi relationship and are careful of how it is handled because it is suck an integral part of the show and can impact the whole dynamic…
They put a lot of effort into trying to get it right…
Then they just throw the other couples together in a very rushed fashion….
Maybe it because they just don’t care because they won’t last long enough to matter or be a big enough part of the show to have any impact at all…
    Let’s all hope so.

  35. I agree about the comments about realism.
…and the need to suspend belief to enjoy the show.
However, this show spends a lot of time and effort to “get things right”
They use some good consultants for these things.
The way they handle the weapons, conduct a breech entry, cover each other…
It looks good and it is obvious they care.

But, if it was more realistic…
Everyone would be in prison, Right
Hetty couldn’t survive with her management style, she would be in jail for deceiving her superiors and misappropriation of funds.
Sam and Callen would be walking back to the mission, taking a lot of Uber or taxi rides, and always be in a rental car…
How do you leep the Challenger running, or even explain the hundreds of bullet holes and broken glass in that thing…
One Hour Auto Glass and Auto Body in LA must be pretty darn good.

They violate rules of engagement, work outside of their authority, don’t take time off after shootings, violate chain of custody and evidence handling, processing requirements,
entrapment, eavesdropping and surveillance, recording, warrant requirements, impersonating other agencies, handling and using explosive, use of deadly force…the list is endless.
But we look the other way and accept it just fine…assuming the characters act the way they have been portrayed to act for the last 7 years…

Eric’s reactions were ridiculous…he stopped just short of high fiving after killing someone…
…who happened to be driving away and was no longer a threat…
That would be on par with shooting a US citizen in the back…
    Not acceptable.

  37. The comments about the actors doing caricatures of themselves and impressions is so accurate.
They just don’t ring true, because it is so different from what the writers have spent 7 years telling us that these people are and how they act.
It is not that they are doing a bad job of acting, because they are still the talented cast that the always have been..
It is the fact that they have been playing these characters for 7 or 8 years…
They get an idea as to how they act and what they believe…what motivates them and so on.
They try to get into the character, make it their own and stay as true to the character as they can…

Then the writers pull this crap, and as an actor, you have absolutely no idea how they are supposed to act because everything you know and believe about you character and has been cannon for 8 years has just been dumped on its head…
They are likely as confused as we are…WTF !

    • Even Kensi’s “I’ll tell you what, you go build me a fire outside so that I can roast my marshmallows, maybe later we can have a little couple’s retreat of our own” to Deeks didn’t work the way it was supposed to work, in my opinion, it fell quite flat and seemed (to me) a little forced and not genuinely enthusiastic or flirty or seductive or charming. Kensi and Deeks (DR and ECO too?) in the RV seemed more bored than happy to be alone with each other. They had a job to do, it’s true, but they could also have enjoyed each other’s company without being shot at as usual, just for a change.

After how long we have been waiting, I hope if we get a proposal and real engagement by the end of the season it won’t be with this very same atmosphere and the characters/actors will be able to show some enthusiasm for that huge step and love for each other. I would be very disappointed if it was presented and acted just as whatever random scene it happens to be filmed every week.

it might be hard to believe, but at times I almost force myself to vent…
because it may be the only emotion I get much of from the show at that time…
and if I don’t allow myself to feel frustration…I feel nothing…and then I will no longer care enough to vent. Then to re watch, then to watch live, then to even be bothered to record at all…then
to care at all. then it slips away…

i have resorted to re-watching episodes from last season and rereading fanfiction, because I have already read most everything Densi. there is some very good writing, but the volume has diminished dramatically. some of the writers have lost interest and moved on. and , it appears, that the ones remaining at times struggle for inspiration…
This season has given me personally very little worth re-watching or even worth taking up space on my DVR…
    that honestly bothers me.

But ,because of being the optimist that I always am…I try to figure out what will happen next.
here is my solution and a way to keep me entertained.

I play this game where I try to figure out and work through what new roadblock the couple will face.

    I call it Shipwreck Island…
the trick is to present more of the same old stuff in a way that the writers will convince themselves that they are being original and creative. we all know there will be another big roadblock…but what.???
    that is the question.
so, I look back as all the ridiculous things that the writers have done to the couple and try to figure out where they might go and come up with my own.

come on, this can be fun…

Deeks delays, And Kensi actually asks for her ring and says she is ready. Deeks isn’t.

Jack is in trouble again and Kensi volunteers to go help him

LAPD pulls Deeks back for a long term undercover op.

    IA arrests Deeks

The mole hunt resurfaces and one of them gets hurt or kidnapped

While in a fight, Kensi gets hit or thrown to the ground on her back and her leg goes numb for a second, fear resurfaces and she pulls back again.

A new asst. director oversees the team and he has a strict policy. the keep it unofficial to avoid being separated as partners.

Kensi realizes she does really love her job more than anything and needed it for motivation, doesn’t want to leave, and does not want to start a family. Deeks wants kids and realizes they want different things

Somebody from their past returns to do one of them harm.

Siderov resurfaces and they put things on hold to go after him

Maybe Deeks relapses when seeing Siderov face to face

A girl shows up with a kid claiming Deeks is the father, Deeks makes a family and walks away from the love of his life

A girl shows up with a kid and Kensi pulls back.

A kid gets dropped off and Deeks gets custody…now they are a package deal… will Kensi still want to get married.

Deeks asks, Kensi says yes, the get to be happy…where did I park my Unicorn…Lindy gimme my rainbow back…

What do you guys think is most likely???

  50. I’m afraid EB has been taking lessons from DK on how to disappoint Densi fans and/or change canon as she wishes.

Did we want some closure for Kensi and her abandonment issues after Jack had left her out of the blue a Christmas morning? From Kensi we got a “we broke up” and a “sorry I haven’t called you after Afghanistan”, instead. (“Come back”)

Did we crave a beautiful, intimate, well-deserved, domestic Densi, “Welcome home Kensi” from hospital scene, just the two of them, in their new house after all they had been through? We got six empty beer bottles, an empty house, dinner ready in the fridge, a message even more impersonal than if written by a secretary and a puzzled and hurt Deeks, instead. (“Sirens”)

Were we looking forward to some nice Densi moments after all the angst of this season, helicopter crashes, almost death, coma, long rehab, disability, abduction, torture? Did we think being alone in an RV, in the woods could be the perfect scenario? We got quite a bored and annoyed Kensi, a punch, an almost OOC Deeks, forced dialogs, while the rest of the world (Neric) was hugging and kissing and becoming official without apparently being lectured by anyone (“Getaway”).

Wow… I must take a break… This show has the ability of driving me nuts as much as it has (had?) the power of getting me hooked (just from the start).
